Safe Kids Volusia / Flagler Most people are surprised to learn preventable injuries are the number one cause of death to children in the United States.

Safe Kids Worldwide® is a nonprofit organization working to reduce unintentional injuries to children ages 0-14 and build equitable and sustainable systems that support injury prevention. Safe Kids works with strategic partners and an extensive network of more than 400 coalitions in the U.S. to reduce traffic injuries, drownings, sleep-related deaths, falls, burns, poisonings, and more. We achieve

this work through a public health approach that includes research, interventions to educate and raise awareness, safety device distribution, and advocacy at the federal, state, and local levels. In Volusia and Flagler Counties, we are the Safe Kids Coalition--working to stop preventable injuries in children and create and support meaningful programming to promote safety to families in our community.

Water Safety Wednesday: Blow up toys can be fun but do not replace the need for adult supervision! Inflatable rafts, rings, water wings, and floats are NOT safety devices. They have no safety requirements and can fail. In fact, they can lead parents to have a false sense of security which can actually increase drowning risk. Talk to your neighbors about pool barriers and water safety! They are a great way to limit a child for accessing the pool without supervision. Door alarms and locked gates also give adults a chance to notice a child's absence.

Florida law requires riders under 16 to wear a helmet on an e-mobility device (e-MMDs). And now DeLand goes a step further. Under the new city ordinance, all riders under 18 must wear a helmet while operating an e-MMD. Anyone under 18 years old riding an e-MMD without a helmet may be stopped and cited by one of our officers. This new requirement is about keeping young riders safer. One of the most common injuries from e-MMD accidents is head trauma. A helmet is a small thing that makes a big difference.

The Hard Truth – Drowning Statistics

The numbers are staggering. In the United States, more children ages 1–4 die from drowning than any other cause of death. For children ages 5–14, drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury death after motor vehicle crashes. And for every child who dies, another 7–8 receive emergency care for non-fatal drowning, which can result in lifelong disabilities. These are not just numbers—they represent families and futures. We can change this.

It’s Bike Safety Month! Did you know that properly fitted helmets can reduce the risk of head injuries by at least 45%? Get the proper fit for your safety gear by doing a helmet fit test with your kids!

Here's how in three simple steps:

1. Eyes: Put the helmet on your head. Look up. You should see the bottom rim of the helmet.

2. Ears: Make sure the straps form a "V" under the ears when buckled. The straps should be a little tight but comfortable.

3. Mouth: Open your mouth as wide as you can. Does the helmet hug your head? If not, tighten the strap.

Voila, you're done! Something as simple as wearing a helmet (properly!) can make a big difference in keeping your child safe. 🚴🏿

PSA for winter time:
Now that it’s cold outside, here’s your reminder that coats are not safe in the car seat. Puffy winter jackets create too much space under the straps, and in a crash, that space can flatten leaving the harness far too loose to protect your child.

But don’t worry, there are safe alternatives:
✔️ Strap them in snugly first, then place a blanket OVER the straps
✔️ Use a car seat–safe poncho
✔️ Warm the car ahead of time if you can

Keeping them warm shouldn’t mean compromising their safety.
No coats in the car seat. Ever. Stay safe this winter!
