Tax deductions should be on those materials reused and based on value of potential sales (25-75% off retail, depending on condition). Not based on the value of the whole house and certainly not on the value of the square footage of the property based on any given zip code. We have been saying just this for 20+ years. I hope homeowners will educate themselves about this case law and how they run the risk of having a deduction denied because bad actors trying to get away with improper appraisals and ultimately take away business from those who playing by the rules.

Reuse takes pressure off landfills and it saves much of the energy embedded in the salvaged material. This leads to participation by earnest people who want to do things right and don't want the purity of the industry besmirched by bad actors.

Interesting read. The IRS is confronting a few bad actors who are potentially harming the good work of the overall reuse industry.

If the salvageable material from deconstructing your house is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, you should not need to pay somebody to take the house apart so that you can give the pieces to charity. There should be people waving money in front of your face to come in and take it apart.

Join us at and enjoy yet another great panel discussion - this time on collaborative consumption.

We’re excited to highlight another one of our fabulous discussion panels: "Collaborative Consumption & The Sharing Economy (A Spotlight on Cincinnati)”

This panel discussion, moderated by Sue Magness from the City Of Cincinnati Government Office of Environment and Sustainability, will include speakers from Cincy Red Bike (Jason Barron), Cincinnati Community ToolBank (Kat Pepmeyer), and The Play Library (Brooke Harris).

Enjoy brief presentations from each of the speakers, and then participate in a moderated discussion on how sharing positively impacts the economy. Learn how bartering and peer-to-peer renting, which has been used by societies for thousands of years, is making a come-back in Cincinnati.

Congratulations to Seattle!
