Yesterday, we celebrated the completion of a two-year cohort through the Nonprofit Capacity Building Partnership, an incredible initiative sponsored by The Mathile Family Foundation and The Dayton Foundation.
Over the past two years, we received invaluable training, guidance, and resources that have challenged us to think differently about how we serve our communities, strengthen our leadership, and build more sustainable organizations. This experience pushed us to engage in meaningful self-reflection, evaluate our effectiveness, and consider new ways to increase our impact.
There were certainly moments when the work felt overwhelming. The expectations were high, and the process often required us to confront difficult questions about our organizations and ourselves as leaders. Yet I remained committed because of the positive, supportive, and welcoming environment that surrounded us every step of the way.
What began as a cohort became something much more. Friendships were forged, partnerships were created, and together we built a true "think tank" where ideas could be shared openly and challenges could be addressed collectively. As we prepared our final presentation, we visited each other's organizations, shared meals, exchanged perspectives, and sought advice on the real issues we face in our daily work. Through those experiences, our small group became family.
Although the formal cohort has come to an end, our journey together is far from over. We are committed to continuing these relationships, strengthening our collaboration, and working together to create better opportunities and brighter futures for the Dayton community.
To my new family—Mayra Durán (El Puente), Adrianne Miller (NCCJ), Lake Miller (NCCJ), Moses Mbeseha (The Conscious Connect), Destinye Arnold (The Conscious Connect), Rachel Jessup (YWCA), Lori Lubbers (YWCA), and Ashton Dupler (The Equity Center)—it has been an honor to learn, grow, and work alongside each of you. I am deeply grateful for the friendships, wisdom, and support we have shared throughout this journey.
And as all families do, ours will continue to grow. We look forward to welcoming and connecting with other members of the cohort as we move forward together.
My sincere thanks to the organizers and supporters who made this experience possible: Kippy Ungerleider and The Mathile Family Foundation, Mike Parks and The Dayton Foundation, Mary Tyler, and Jay Meyer for their wisdom, guidance, and encouragement. Special thanks as well to Hillary, Tanya, Annie, and Chris for the countless ways they supported us behind the scenes. Your dedication made a lasting difference.
This experience has strengthened not only our organizations but also our collective commitment to building a stronger, more connected, and more equitable Dayton. Many blessings to all!
