If a loved one or someone close to you is experiencing suicidal thoughts, simple actions can show your support and prevent them from an attempt to take their life.

Evidence also shows asking someone if they're suicidal can actually protect them. By asking someone directly about su***de, you give them permission to tell you how they feel, and let them know that they are not a burden.

Remember that help is always available. You can call or text the 988 Su***de and Crisis Lifeline or text HOME to the Crisis Text Line at 741741. Both resources provide judgement-free, compassionate support 24/7/365.

Today is World Mental Health Day. It is a day to raise awareness about mental health issues and to show support for people in our community who suffer from mental health conditions.

Mental health includes a person’s emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how someone thinks, feels, and acts. It also determines how we handle stress, relate to others, and make decisions.

Just like our physical health, mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood. If you experience mental health problems during your lifetime, your thinking, mood, and behavior could be affected.

Several factors contribute to mental health conditions, including:

• Biological factors, such as genes or brain chemistry
• Life experiences, such as trauma or abuse
• Family history of mental health problems

Mental health conditions and illnesses include anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), borderline personality disorder (BPD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), eating disorders, and su***de and suicidal behavior. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, nearly one-in-five adults live with a mental illness.

A mental health condition interferes with a person’s life and can make it a struggle to work, keep up with school, stick to a regular schedule, have healthy relationships, maintain hygiene, or complete simple daily functions. It is not a choice, weakness, a problem with someone’s character, or something that just “goes away” one day. In most cases, some form of consistent treatment is necessary, whether it is medication, therapy or counseling, or a combination of those treatment options. With treatment, it is possible to manage the condition, overcome challenges, and lead a productive and meaningful life.

In addition to sticking to a treatment plan, learning about the condition, practicing self-care, getting enough sleep, and reaching out to family and friends for support can help someone with a mental health condition to live well. Developing coping skills is another helpful way to deal with the condition. A list of coping skills can be found here: https://www.samhsa.gov/find-support/how-to-cope.

Mental health treatment is just as important as any other type of health care treatment. If someone is suffering from mental illness, they should receive the same care and support as someone who is suffering from another medical ailment or disease. Mental health is health and, together, we can break the stigma that surrounds it.

As we reach the end of ***dePreventionMonth, it is critical to keep the momentum going beyond September. The end of the month doesn’t mean the end of the effort to save lives.

Here are some important things to remember throughout the rest of the year and beyond:

1. Know the Signs: People who are considering su***de often show signs that they are planning to attempt su***de. Recognizing the common warning signs can be the first step in getting someone the help they need and in saving their life. Find the warning signs here: https://sprc.org/warning-signs-for-su***de/.

2. Get Help: Nobody has to suffer alone. Whether you are considering su***de, struggling with your mental health, are in emotional distress, supporting someone in crisis, or just need someone to talk to, help is available. The 988 Su***de and Crisis Lifeline is available to provide judgement-free, compassionate, one-on-one support, 24/7/365. You can also text HOME to the Crisis Text Line at 741741 for mental health support and crisis intervention, 24/7/365.

3. Check on Your Family, Friends, and Loved Ones: Sometimes, just a simple check-in on your family, friends, and loved ones to see how they’re doing can go a very long way. Just asking someone if they’re doing OK will show that you care and might even help them open up to you about something they may be struggling with in their everyday life. Being a good listener, staying engaged, and offering support can make a huge difference in the life of someone important to you.

4. Always Remember…You Matter: Regardless of what you’re going through or have been through, your life is valuable and you matter. You are a unique person with a unique set of qualities – there is no one else like you and there never will be. The world is a much better place with you in it and you belong here.

Together, we can make a difference. 💜🩵

If you’re struggling with life’s challenges and feel like you’ve lost hope, it’s OK not to be OK.

If you’re having a bad day at work and the demands of your job seem overwhelming, it’s OK not to be OK.

If your family is in crisis and a loved one is dealing with unbearable pain, it’s OK not to be OK.

If a friend or someone close to you has let you down or disappointed you and you are hurting emotionally, it’s OK not to be OK.

If your finances aren’t where they should be and you’re just trying to afford basic needs, it’s OK not to be OK.

Navigating through life isn’t easy for many of us. Sometimes, just getting out of bed can be difficult, and then just trying to live your life can feel simply impossible to do. If this sounds like you, just know that it’s OK not to be OK. Su***de is not the solution. The world is a much better place with you in it.

If you or someone you know is in crisis, call or text the 988 Su***de and Crisis Lifeline to be connected to a trained professional today. They will provide judgement-free support and guidance to help you get through whatever you’re dealing with.

There truly is power in help.

And, remember…it’s OK not to be OK. 💜🩵

We, in partnership with Omega Psi Phi, recently trained 35 students from Johnson C. Smith University in our L.E.T.S. Save Lives program!
