🌊🛟Swimming Lessons🛟🌊
Now Completed for this Spring! 🌷
Duck Derby Heading Our Way 🦆🏁

Kids from the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades at the Dayton Elementary School completed swimming lessons at the Walla Walla YMCA during February and March. Each class was bussed to the YMCA in school buses for two-week sessions. Expenses for both lessons and bussing were paid by the Friends of the Pool Committee with funds granted from the Innovia Foundation, the Warren Foundation, the Columbia County/Dayton Community Foundation and The Exchange Club of Walla Walla. As the YMCA itself has separate grants to support swimming lessons in outlying communities, the cost of lessons was reduced. Many thanks to all involved for helping kids from Columbia County learn to swim, be safe in the water and to safely have fun in the water.

This was the second year of this program. Last year only the 1st and 2nd grades participated. Earlier news releases indicated that 4th and 5th grade classes also would participate this year. Unfortunately, classroom schedules and statewide testing requirements intervened, so the 4th and 5th grade lessons were canceled. Funds are available in future for older classes to participate if scheduling can be arranged.

In addition, Friends of the Pool will pay for older, experienced swimmers from anywhere in the county to become trained in life saving and water safety instruction. These are certificated programs offered by the Red Cross. If interested contact the Walla Walla YMCA directly. In the last two years, several local youths have earned this certification.

In other news, Friends of the Pool Committee will use past charitable donations to help fund the upcoming Duck Derby to be put on by the Columbia County Parks & Recreation Pool District. The derby will occur during Alumni Weekend. “Parks & Rec” ticket sales for the derby will be added to the capital campaign that “Parks & Rec” is undertaking for replacing the defunct community pool in Dayton. The Duck Derby will be loads of fun for all, with lots of prizes for many including some really big prizes. Look for upcoming promotions for this event! 📰🔦

This towards support of swimming lessons for Columbia County youth. Our first efforts were via the Dayton School District bussing entire classes of 1st and 2nd graders to the Walla Walla YMCA in April. It seemed to work well, the YMCA provided each class with wonderful early-youth instruction and the kids were ecstatic! Kudos to the school for inserting this program this spring, getting the kids to and from the pool very efficiently -- fantastic job! In future we hope to grow the program to include more grades, and perhaps additional times of the school year.

We are so grateful to Innovia for providin grant funds for bussing expenses and pool expenses. Many many thanks from all of us!

nnovia Foundation is awarding $1,250,414 in grants to 113 organizations in Eastern Washington and North Idaho through its annual Community Grants Program.
