The Rotary Club of Oakwood and the Oakwood Rotary Foundation presented a check to Patterson Park Commissioner Karen Sexton, in support of the Patterson Park Youth Baseball and Softball. The grant will go to update their speaker system, purchase a refrigerator, freezer, and hot dog and taco machines.

Opening Day is fast approaching and Rudy, the UD Flyers mascot will attend to make the day extra-special as the Majors and Minor players, ages 9-12, take the field waving their caps to the fans in the stands.

Patterson Park has provided 65 years of tradition and fun to Dayton with a superior sports experience focusing on teamwork, sportsmanship, respect and baseball and softball development in a safe and enjoyable place.

Last Friday we hosted our very own Rotarian, City Manager Katie Smiddy for an insightful update on her first 17 months leading our wonderful city. From modernization to major infrastructure, Katie and her team have been busy making "the place we call home" even better!

Here are the 7 major initiatives currently shaping Oakwood:

✅ The EPA Mandate: Work is underway to replace lead/copper service lines. If you received a letter about your pipes, please reply! ✅ Hiring Boom: New faces are joining City Hall, including a Finance Director and Code Enforcement Officer to keep things running smoothly.
✅ Pool Operations: We’re ready for summer! Swim Safe has been brought in to oversee staffing and maintenance at the pool.
✅ Economic Development: Discussions are ongoing regarding the 2600 Far Hills building to bring it up to code and transform it into a thriving source of tax revenue.
✅ Organizational Assessment: The city is streamlining! This includes merging Public Works and Parks for better efficiency and upgrading our water plant.
✅ Business District Initiative: Council members recently hit the pavement for a "business walk" to learn how the city can better support our local shops.
✅ Modernization: We’re going digital! From e-filing taxes to online payroll and budget books, Oakwood is more efficient than ever.

The Rotary Club of Oakwood is thrilled to announce a grant award to the Chesterton Academy of St. Joseph!

Our sponsor, Tom Dalrymple, joined Matt Glenn and Alaina Davis from the Academy to celebrate this partnership. This grant will go directly toward refurbishing and furnishing two new academic rooms at their Fairborn campus.

As the school prepares to grow from 56 to over 70 students for the 2026-2027 school year, these funds will help ensure they have the space needed to continue their mission of providing a rich, classical liberal arts education.

Congratulations to the Chesterton Academy of St. Joseph!

We are proud to support your growth and your commitment to the four cardinal virtues: prudence, temperance, fortitude, and justice.

Chesterton Academy of St. Joseph is a joyfully, Catholic classical high school that opened in Fall 2022 in Dayton, Ohio.

Building a Greener Oakwood, One Backyard at a Time!

We were thrilled to welcome Cheryl Lloyd, co-leader of Green Oakwood, as our guest speaker last Friday. Cheryl is a powerhouse of environmental stewardship, even turning her own backyard on Orchard Drive into a model for native plant gardening.

Green Oakwood is more than just a group; it’s a movement of neighbors helping neighbors:

🌸 Planting native trees and flowers to support local wildlife.

🚫 Eradicating invasive species and reducing yard chemicals.

♻️ Organizing community recycling drives (like those broken holiday lights!).

🤝 Partnering on projects like the Native Pollinator Garden at Wright Memorial Public Library.

How can others help?

It’s easy to get involved! Join the Green Oakwood Facebook group to stay in the loop, volunteer for an upcoming garden installation, or suggest a collaborative workshop. Let’s work together to protect our local ecosystem!

Not so long ago, in a kennel in Xenia called 4 Paws for Ability, a very special puppy was born for greatness.

We are bursting with pride to announce that our Rotary-sponsored pup, Chopper, has officially graduated!

On February 13th, Chopper joined the Denim Class and began his new life of service with Camila and the Luz family in San Antonio, Texas.

As the first graduate from our litter of Rotary pups, he’s paving the way for a future of freedom and adventure for his new family. That is pure magic!

The "Rotary Litter" Update:
Still Studying: Keep an eye out for Clementine and Bougie as they work toward their graduation!

The "Fabulous Flunkies": Dottie, Millie, and Lumberjack may have taken a different path, but they are living their best lives bringing endless love to their adoptive families.

Last Friday, we hosted were honored to have Julie Lewis Grunwald, a dedicated volunteer with the League of Women Voters of the Greater Dayton Area, speak to us.

Julie, a longtime resident of the Dayton region and Springboro, shared a powerful look at the history of Freedom of Speech, from its roots in the Magna Carta to the landmark 1969 Brandenburg v. Ohio Supreme Court decision.

She highlighted how the League has been a watchdog for our rights for decades, including:

Educating communities during the McCarthy era.

Fighting against modern-day book bans.

Defending the right to peaceful protest and voter education.

Freedom of speech isn’t just a legal concept; it’s the heartbeat of our grassroots democracy right here in Montgomery County.

When we protect the "marketplace of ideas," we strengthen our entire community.

Thank you, Julie, for your commitment to informed citizen participation!
