Big news! Ohio's Return-to-Learn bill is officially House Bill 847.

This bipartisan bill, sponsored by Rep. Jarrells and Rep. Williams, would ensure Ohio schools have policies in place to support students returning to class after a brain injury.

Brain injuries affect more than athletics — they impact memory, focus, emotions, and learning. Too many families struggle to navigate school supports during recovery.

Please contact your Ohio legislators and ask them to support House Bill 847. biaoh.org/advocacy

During Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re reminded how important it is to talk openly about the connection between brain injury and mental health. Harmful myths can create silence and stigma, but the truth is that suicidal thoughts can occur after a traumatic brain injury. Awareness, screening, and support matter. Sharing accurate information helps us respond with compassion, reduce stigma, and support healing.

Our outreach coordinator, Brett, helped organize an Interprofessional Education event bringing together University of Dayton students from Dietetics, Physician Assistant, Counseling, Physical Therapy, and Nursing to collaborate on a complex mock case involving a patient living with the long-term effects of a traumatic brain injury (TBI). As his cognitive decline progressed alongside worsening mobility and safety risks, the need for a team-based approach to his care became critical.

Students worked as an interprofessional team to evaluate medical needs, safety concerns, caregiver strain, financial realities, and quality of life — ultimately collaborating with the patient and family to determine the most appropriate care path forward.

Brain injury doesn't just affect one area of life — it affects all of them. That's why interprofessional collaboration is essential in providing comprehensive, patient-centered care for TBI survivors.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month - and brain injury and mental health are deeply connected.
After a concussion or TBI, anxiety, depression, irritability, and sleep changes can be part of recovery, not a character flaw. Support should treat the whole person: brain and mind.
