A time capsule sealed inside the North Dayton Patriots Memorial since 1946 will be opened this Flag Day as part of a special celebration in Old North Dayton honoring local heroes and preserving community history.

The event will also feature the rededication of the memorial and a commemoration of Cpl. Tony Stein, USMC, Dayton’s only World War II Medal of Honor recipient.

Supporting this celebration, we're funding a documentary by Reba Gilbert that will tell the story of Tony Stein’s military service and selfless actions during World War II. The film will also document the opening of the 1946 time capsule, helping preserve and share these stories for future generations.

See the flyer below for event details.

Did you know the Wright brothers owned and operated a bicycle business before they took to the skies? The skills and ideas they developed there helped shape their path to powered flight.

Restoration work at the Paul Laurence Dunbar House is complete!

This past Sunday, the restoration project was recognized with a 2026 Excellence in Preservation Award from Preservation Dayton, Inc. This honor celebrates the work happening across the region to care for historic places and the partnerships that make it possible, including at the Dunbar House.

Led by the National Aviation Heritage Area, the project addressed long-standing needs at the historic home, including drainage improvements, masonry repairs, and stabilization of the foundation and exterior features; helping to protect the building while preserving its historic character and visitor experience.

The project included construction oversight by Ohio History Connection, while Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park continued daily operations throughout the work, a true collaborative effort.

We’re proud to see this important work recognized and to help ensure the Dunbar House remains preserved and accessible for the community to experience and learn from for generations to come.
