In this article, The AFIT Foundation will be recognizing Colonel (Retired) Emre Kaya, Boeing 737 pilot with Alaska Airlines.

Colonel Kaya received his MS in Space Systems Engineering, Systems Engineering (Certificate Degree) from the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) in 2008. He joined the military due to a desire to be a jet pilot. After retiring from the Turkish Air Force as a Colonel, he joined Alaska Airlines as a Boeing 737 pilot.

Four years after graduating from the Turkish Air Force Academy, and having been away from intensive math and physics for some time, Colonel Kaya was amazed at how quickly everything came back after a short crash course at AFIT. It reminded him that deep foundational knowledge never really disappears—it just needs the right trigger.

Another defining experience for Colonel Kaya at AFIT was the mini-satellite group project he worked on with his classmates. At first, the scope felt overwhelming, but with time and exceptional teamwork, they achieved results that far exceeded their expectations in a surprisingly short period. That project became a lasting example he often uses to reinforce the importance of collaboration and trust within a team.

Finally, Colonel Kaya was proud to see his thesis work becoming reality after 17 years. NASA’s Artemis II mission will send the Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle to the Moon, and his thesis focused on the return and atmospheric entry trajectory of the Orion CEV. Seeing concepts he once studied on paper now implemented in an operational space mission was incredibly rewarding for him.

As a NATO officer, Colonel Kaya had the opportunity to study and work side by side with his U.S. Air Force colleagues, which was both professionally and personally rewarding. Beyond the classroom, it broadened his perspective on Air Force operations, leadership, and teamwork. The quality of education they received, along with the challenging and meaningful projects they worked on together, opened new horizons for Colonel Kaya and left a lasting impression on how powerful collaboration can be across nations and cultures.

When asked about what advice he would give to those considering entering the military, Colonel Kaya said that at first, the highly structured environment of the military can seem intimidating and demanding. He writes, “However, the experiences we gain, the people we have the privilege to work with, and the quality of training we receive shape us into disciplined, resilient, and successful individuals. These are qualities we often come to appreciate later in life—and ones we can truly be proud of.” Thank you, Colonel Kaya!

In this article, The AFIT Foundation will be recognizing Major, USAF (Retired) Darryl Mosley, CISSP, CCISO, CEH, PMP, Senior Director for Defense Cyber and Mission Systems Group at Silotech Group, Inc.

Major Mosley received his MS in Information Resource Management from the U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) in 1998. He joined the military due to a desire to continue a legacy of service. Major Mosley’s father was a career Air Force veteran, and his grandfather served under General Patton in World War II. After 20 years of service, Major Mosley retired from the Air Force and entered defense contracting to continue to contribute. He is now the Senior Director for Business Development and Capture at Silotech Group Inc.

Major Mosley’s favorite memory from AFIT was the first day of class when he realized he was actually in graduate school after growing up even wondering if he would be able to go to college. The Air Force made it possible for him. He also enjoyed meeting his classmates and forging bonds and friendships that last to this day. AFIT helped Major Mosley develop and sharpen tools he needed daily in his personal and professional life, such as problem solving and navigating group dynamics to achieve a common goal. It also helped to broaden his horizons, hone his critical thinking skills, and expose him to new perspectives.

When asked about what advice he would give to those considering entering the military, Major Mosley said to stay focused on your goals - the military can be physically and mentally demanding, so stay locked in on why you joined. He also writes, “Embrace the challenge - the environment can be hard, but each challenge is a chance to grow; Learn to adapt - like we say in the Air Force, flexibility is the key to airpower. Change is inevitable, but don't get discouraged by setbacks. Every setback is a setup for a comeback. Ask questions and learn - don't be afraid to ask questions and learn from those around you. There will always be someone that knows more. This is important to your continued growth.” Thank you, Major Mosley!

In this issue, The AFIT Foundation recognizes Colonel John D. Thomas, President of the Defense Studies Institute (DSI).

Colonel Thomas received his MS in Logistics Management/Systems Acquisition from the U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) in 1985. During the summer break between his 9th and 10th grade of high school, he came across some books in the school library about the three military service academies. Looking through the books, he immediately decided he wanted to attend one of the service academies. As it turned out, his congressman sent him to the U.S. Air Force Academy. It was a perfect situation for him. Colonel Thomas retired from the Air Force in 2007. Upon retirement, he founded the Defense Studies Institute which publishes military related books and articles and also hosts small business events with the Department of Defense (DoD). In addition, he has written six guidebooks related to DoD contracting and the federal civil service. Thousands of small business leaders/owners have used these guidebooks to gain entry into the world of government contracting.

Colonel Thomas enjoyed the classroom lectures at AFIT when the instructors would relate how the information they were teaching related to "real world" situations in the Air Force. AFIT was able to give him a broader perspective into DoD operations on a global basis. As a result, upon graduation he was able to take on responsibilities in Europe related to the deployment of the new intermediate range cruise missiles in the 1980s and eventually with the implementation of the Intermediately Nuclear Forces Treaty, for which he was selected as the Logistics Officer to oversee its ex*****on. In the subsequent years, Colonel Thomas was fortunate to hold many exciting positions culminating in his selection as the Program Manager for the Joint Cargo Aircraft program- a joint Air Force and Army program. This program was one of the very few major DoD new aircraft acquisition programs that finished ahead of schedule and under budget! Many of the lessons learned at AFIT helped him and his acquisition team accomplish this.

When asked about what advice he would give to those considering entering the military, Colonel Thomas said that a military career is not for everyone, however, if it is right for you, then go for it! It can be a very rewarding life. Thank you, Colonel Thomas!
