This year, AJ would be going to kindergarten. I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately, especially as we get his little sister ready for preschool. I’m excited for her, but it also hurts knowing I don’t get to do any of those first-day things with AJ. I don’t get to walk him into his classroom, fill his backpack with markers and folders, or argue with his mom about buying him some ridiculous lunchbox even though we already have three at home. I don’t get to wonder if he’s nervous or ask him a million questions after school just to hear “I don’t know” when I ask what he did all day.

That’s one of the hardest parts about losing a child. You miss all the memories you were supposed to have. AJ was born still on April of 2021, and even though life keeps moving and we have so much to be thankful for, milestones like the first day of school still hit hard…
