Early Roots: Community Birth Workers

Historically, Black women served as midwives, “granny midwives,” and birth attendants throughout Africa and the African diaspora. During enslavement in the United States, enslaved Black women cared for pregnant people, attended births, provided herbal remedies, and supported postpartum recovery—often with no choice, yet with deep knowledge passed down through generations.

After emancipation, granny midwives became the primary maternity care providers for Black families in the South, especially in rural communities. They offered holistic care that included emotional support, spiritual grounding, and practical guidance—roles that closely resemble modern doulas.

Are you thinking about becoming pregnant? 🤰🏾
Are you currently pregnant? 🤰🏾
Or are you newly postpartum and wishing you had more support?

Come meet the doulas who are ready to walk alongside you!

Finding the right doula is about more than choosing a name from a list — it’s about finding someone who listens to you, respects your wishes, supports your voice, and fits your needs.

Join us for a fun and intentional “speed dating” style event where you’ll have the opportunity to meet multiple black doulas, ask questions, learn about their services and specialties, and discover who may be the right fit for your journey.

Registration is required. Light refreshments offered and several giveaways.

Note: You must be pregnant or newly postpartum (child under one year of age) and live in Montgomery County to be eligible for giveaways.
