on June 9, 2008, SPC Thomas F. Duncan III, assigned to 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, as a result of gunshot wounds received during combat operations near Sinjar, Iraq.

"On 8 June 2008, SPC Duncan boarded a helicopter with three other Rangers en route to his final mission in support of another unit. While assaulting the target, the force received substantial small arms and machinegun fire, resulting in one of the assaulters becoming a casualty directly adjacent to the enemy-held compound.

After gathering additional fragmentary hand grenades from his three fellow Rangers, SPC Duncan left the safety of his overwatch position to rush forward through enemy fire where the casualty lay exposed. He then assisted in moving the casualty to cover while continuing to engage the enemy with both his weapon and hand grenades. SPC Duncan was mortally wounded while continuing to protect the casualty." ( IG page)

Get ready to celebrate America's birthday with purpose! OnPoint1-1's Run For Rangers program is proud to partner with Flora-Bama for the 6th Annual Freedom Run on Saturday, July 4, 2026. This patriotic event brings together runners, walkers, families, and supporters from across the country to honor our nation's freedom while supporting those who have served it.
A portion of all race proceeds will benefit OnPoint1-1's Run For Rangers Program, which provides race entries, training opportunities, and community support while raising awareness and funding for programs that directly impact U.S. Army Rangers, veterans, first responders, and their families.

June 6 marks the anniversary of D-Day, one of the most consequential days in military history. For the Ranger community, it carries a legacy that still echoes today.

On June 6, 1944, the 2nd and 5th Ranger Battalions fought through the landings at Normandy. At Pointe du Hoc, Rangers from the 2nd Ranger Battalion scaled the cliffs under enemy fire to eliminate German positions threatening the beachhead. During the fighting at Omaha Beach, Rangers earned the words that would become more than a motto:

Rangers lead the way.

That legacy is still carried by the Ranger community today, including the modern 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment.

on May 26, 2008, SPC Christopher Gathercole, assigned to 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, died from wounds sustained from small-arms fire suffered during a combat operation in Ghazni, Afghanistan.

His unit was conducting a daytime helicopter assault on a set of buildings believed to be housing several high-target terrorists. After easily clearing the outer buildings, the Rangers reached the target building when a firefight began, during which SPC Gathercole suffered a fatal gunshot wound. SPC Gathercole was killed in the same attack for which SFC Leroy Petry would earn his Medal of Honor, while serving in 2nd Ranger Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment.
