“I wanted to honor the history of the bison and its deep connection to every aspect of our culture—from providing the food that sustained us to the hides that offered warmth and a canvas for our stories. Our entire lifestyle was built around the bison, which held spiritual significance far beyond simple survival.
Historically, we integrated our art forms by recording stories through pictorial works on bison hides and buffalo robes. This piece allowed me to evoke that time and place, highlighting the enduring connection we maintain with the bison in Plains culture. In this quilt block, the background is reminiscent of a bison hide, and I have represented the bison using various patterns, textures, and colors to continue this tradition of storytelling.”—Lauren Good Day (Arikara/Hidatsa/Blackfeet/Plains Cree)
From fashion magazines and museum galleries to college campuses and her Dakota homelands, Lauren Good Day’s art remains true to her heritage and honors her Plains community. For the museum’s first-ever Quilt Along, we asked Good Day to create a block design that responded to the time period prior and up to the American Revolution in 1776. “When I share stories through my artwork, I do so from my own worldview and perspective,” she writes in her artist statement. Her design embodies the material and spiritual connections between Indigenous peoples of the Plains and the bison that have survived generations.
Ready to quilt your own bison herd thundering across the Plains? Block 1 of our Quilt Along featuring Good Day’s design is now available to download for free on our website. There, you will find detailed instructions and a list of all the necessary materials to recreate the design on your own at home. You can also join fellow participants in our Facebook event to share tips, tricks, and resources. https://americanindian.si.edu/quilting/
