Friends of North Davis Ditch Habitat Corridor

Friends of North Davis Ditch Habitat Corridor A volunteer group focused on native plant restoration, citizen science & sustainable landscape education with the North Davis Riparian Greenbelt Project.

The North Davis Riparian Greenbelt Project is an urban "greening" project designed to restore native, drought-tolerant plantings and sustainable landscaping to a storm water conveyance channel in north Davis. Through volunteer participation in the Friends of North Davis Ditch Habitat Corridor group (or North Davis Ditch as locals refer to it) community members can receive education on local native

plants & wildlife habitat, sustainable landscaping for water conservation & improved water quality, and participate in citizen science projects and the development of educational and interpretive materials for the community. Plans for interpretive gardens and educational displays have been developed to enhance 3 of the small "pocket parks" along the Greenbelt/North channel walkway and will provide an on-going opportunity for the community to assist in the native plantings establishment and maintenance, as well as their use as "outdoor classrooms" for community members of all ages to continue to learn about the local ecology and resource conservation. Funding for the project is provided by the Strategic Growth Council's Urban Greening Program funded by the voters of California via Proposition 84. Project partners include the City of Davis, Putah Creek Council, McCord Environmental, Yolo County RCD, UC Davis, Great Valley Design, Center for Land-Based Learning SLEWS program, and Northwest Hydraulic Consultants. The mosaic mural that is pictured as our profile picture and banner was created by local artist Mark Rivera, titled Taking the Scenic Route, 2008 and is located in downtown Davis just south of G Street and Russell, south of the entrance to the USDA building. It depicts a watershed view of the close connection our community has with agriculture and natural resources.

Congratulations to Friends of the North Davis Channel for receiving a 2024 Tree Davis Stewardship Award! The community is invited this Sat. Nov. 2nd at 2-4 pm to the Legacy Celebration held in West Davis at the Memorial Grove along Shasta Drive. More info. at treedavis.org/legacycelebration

This week we will be highlighting our amazing Stewardship Award Honorees.

Friends of the North Davis Channel (FNDC) formed in 2019 to ensure that previous investments from Putah Creek Council and the Yolo Resource Conservation District stayed vibrant. The channel is intended as a stormwater conveyance, but without the love and attention, would be filled with invasive species. Since forming, the FDNC has planted over 100 Climate-Ready Trees, as well as hundreds of native shurbs and plants. The members of FDNC have invested several hundred hours and financial donations to ensure its success. As stated by their nominator: “It is for that extraordinary commitment to maintaining and enhancing the tree canopy in the Ditch and native plant restoration there, that I proudly nominate FDNC for consideration as this year’s Tree Davis Stewardship Award.”

Help us celebrate the Friends of North Davis Channel this Saturday at the fourth annual Tree Davis Legacy Celebration. RSVP and learn more at the link in our bio or visit https://www.treedavis.org/legacycelebration/
