Today is International Rhino Day 🦏

Rhinos are among the most iconic and threatened animals on our planet. These gentle giants have walked the earth for over 50 million years, yet today, they face the very real risk of extinction due to poaching and habitat loss.

On this day, we celebrate their strength, resilience, and importance to our ecosystems — and we recommit to protecting them for future generations. Every rhino saved is a victory for conservation, for biodiversity, and for hope.

As Bushlife Conservancy reminds us:
“If each of us donors found one additional donor, consider what could be accomplished beyond Mana Pool’s boundaries. Could we lease a hunting area and manage it for conservation? Could black rhinos be reintroduced to Mana Pools? The platform is there. The potential is great if we had the funding.”

Let’s stand together to ensure that rhinos continue to roam free in the wild. 🌍💚

This historic image of one of the last remaining black rhinos in Mana Pools National Park was taken by The Zambezi Society’s former Director, Dick Pitman in 1982. On 2022, we look forward to a time in the not too distant future when these magnificent creatures can once again roam free in the Zambezi Valley.

Update on Tusker – One of Mana’s Most Famous Elephants 🐘

Tusker is recovering steadily. The wound on his side has healed well, though an infection recently developed at the base of his tusks, which began oozing pus. Zimparks Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. Chaitezvi, flew in to treat him.

With the support of the Bushlife team, Tusker was safely sedated, the affected area was cleaned, and antibiotics were administered. Encouragingly, his tusks appear to have recovered.

However, his foot has swollen again—a recurring issue we continue to monitor. Despite this, Tusker has been moving around more, though he still rests often, sometimes using termite mounds as pillows.

Every small sign of improvement gives us hope for this iconic bull. 💚

🌍🐾 African Wild Dog Day 🐾🌍

Did you know that African Wild Dogs (Lycaon pictus) have a unique way of deciding when to hunt?
Instead of following a strict leader, they actually “vote” by sneezing!

When the pack gathers, members sneeze to signal their agreement to set off. If enough sneezes are heard, the hunt begins. What’s even more fascinating is that the number of sneezes required depends on who started the process—fewer if it’s a dominant dog, more if it’s a lower-ranking one.

This remarkable “democracy” shows just how special and cooperative these endangered predators are. 💛🖤🤍

Let’s celebrate and spread awareness for these incredible animals today! 🐕✨

If you ever think that you are too small to make a difference, think of a mosquito in your tent.
Today our little biting winged friends celebrate their day (Yes there such a thing as International Mosquito Day)
Your support for African wildlife conservation does matter.
Without it the wild places we love cannot thrive.

10th August is International Lion Day! 🦁
Today we celebrate one of Africa’s most iconic predators. Here are a few fascinating facts about lions you might not know:
🔢 Lions can count: Research shows they can assess the number of roars from rival groups and decide whether to fight or retreat.
👅 Razor-sharp tongues: Their tongues are covered in tiny backward-facing spines strong enough to scrape meat from bone.
🐾 Family connection: Lions share about 95% of their DNA with house cats… but their social lives are wildly different!
At Bushlife Conservancy, we’d like to take this opportunity to recognise the incredible work ZimParks is doing to protect and conserve lions in Zimbabwe. 🧡

🚨 Leopard Rescue and Release! 🐆

At 5am on Saturday, Nick, Charles, Jed, and Charles’ daughter Isabelle set out from camp on a 4-hour drive to the southern boundary community—where Freedom had captured a young male leopard.

Freedom had worked quickly, setting up the cage and bait as soon as the permit was issued. Just two days later, the leopard was caught—not a moment too soon! He was roaming in the garden of a family with three small children.

A large crowd gathered as Nick safely darted the leopard and the team loaded him for relocation. They drove over 200 km (125 miles) to ensure this magnificent cat wouldn’t return, then patiently waited more than 3 hours until he was fully awake and safe before heading home. After a 15-hour day, they returned to camp tired—but victorious.

Thanks to Nick, Freedom, and the entire team’s skill and dedication, this endangered beauty now has another chance to thrive in the wild. 🐾

🙏 This life-saving work is only possible because of your generous support—thank you!

Today we celebrate World Nature Conservation Day, a powerful reminder that the future of our planet — and the magnificent creatures we share it with — is in our hands.

“No species has ever had such wholesale control over everything on Earth... That lays upon us, whether we like it or not, an awesome responsibility. In our hands now lies not only our own future, but that of all other living creatures with whom we share the Earth.”
— Sir David Attenborough

At Bushlife Conservancy, we are proud to support conservation efforts that protect wildlife and habitats in Zimbabwe, Africa. Together, let’s ensure a future where lions still roam, forests still grow, and wild spaces thrive.

💚 Join us in celebrating nature — and protecting it.
