The Bulosan Center for Filipinos Studies Initiative at UC Davis aims to support research, education and advocacy for Filipinos in the United States, the Philippines, and abroad. Filipino American Stories of the Great Grape Strike of 1965 (“welga” is the Tagalog term for “strike”) aims to bring Filipinos’ leadership and engagement in the strike to light through the acquisition and digital archiving

of strike-related material as well as the collection of oral histories of strike participants and supporters. The materials gathered through this 15-month project will be housed on a publicly accessible website and physical archive which will be launched in September 2015, the strike’s 50th anniversary. Indeed, in collaboration with key community stakeholders in the city of Delano, California (where the strike took place), permanent QR (Quick Response) markers will be installed at appropriate sites. The groundbreaking for the QR codes as well as a documentary film that highlights both the Welga research process and the stories gathered through it will take place during Filipino-American History month (October 2015). Finally, a teacher’s resource guide will be produced to support the implementation of AB123, legislation recently signed into law by the state of California, which mandates the teaching of Filipinos’ contribution to the farm worker struggle.

In celebration of Earth Day this year, we’re reminded of the words by Amado Khaya, “Remember to smile, kasama. We take care of ourselves so that we. We take care of ourselves so we can serve our community and each other.”
In the spirit of the 2026 global Earth Day theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” we’re not just reflecting - we’re building forward. As part of that vision, we’re gauging interest in something special: a limited edition 2027 AKI Planner designed to hold intention, monthly reminders of community power, and everyday grounding.
If that’s something you’d want to see come to life, drop a comment below.
This will be created in collaboration with our friends who will be spearheading design!

I couldn’t end March without posting about my mom in her birthday month.

This post is part of a series of posts that draws from our archive and our on-going work in chronicling the histories and experiences of Filipina nurses as well as all other Filipina care workers.

Mama, your care always extended far beyond the hospitals where you worked. Thank you for showing me what community care looks like. Thanks, too, to my kumare who taught all of us that our personal files and records aren’t “junk” but crucial elements of our history.

It was an incredible time of - we fought anti-BIPOC policies at the state, national and international levels. Solidarity was always a core organizing principle.

These are the histories they want to erase. But we have the proof.

all day, every day. ✊🏽

This Thursday, we will host a webinar on 1990s-2000s activism in the SF Bay Area led by Filipinos 🇵🇭. It’s part of a broader archival project to preserve the history of Asian American activism of that time period at the .

2pac amplified the struggles of black and brown folks during this period with his music. People today may not remember or know who Gov. Pete Wilson was, but we should. We can’t take California politics for granted. As written by our founder :

“[P]eople of color were systematically attacked not only by the governor but by highly organized conservative groups and members of the electorate as Propositions 187, 209, 224, and 227 to name a few, were all passed in quick succession. The trend in California became national, leading to the reserval of major civil rights gains, the dwindling of immigrant rights, and the further expansion of the prison industrial complex at both the state and federal levels.”
