Our mission is simple: to enhance the lives of Jewish college students so they can enrich the Jewish community and the world. Our programs and events are wide-ranging. The students have opportunities to participate in a community service project, express themselves artistically, participate in a social event, engage in Jewish learning, or attend religious services. The students shape their own com

munity. We offer an internship program and many other leadership opportunities. Any student may participate in Hillel. There are no membership requirements. 💛✨ Mazel Tov and Farewell, Hallie! ✨💛
After three incredible years with Hillel at Davis & Sacramento, we’re saying farewell to Hallie Unger as she begins an exciting new chapter!

Hallie joined Hillel in September 2023 as our Engagement Associate and was promoted to Assistant Director in early 2024. During her time at Hillel, she supervised the Programming Team, transformed our Internship Program, led student engagement and our event calendar, and helped guide our community through the challenges following October 7 with resilience and compassion.

This August, Hallie will begin a new role as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant at Hagginwood Elementary School while finishing her second bachelor’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders at Sacramento State. After graduating this December, she will apply to graduate programs as she continues toward her goal of becoming a Speech-Language Pathologist!

Please join us in thanking Hallie for three years of hard work, heart, and dedication to our students and community. We wish her nothing but success in this next adventure! 💜🥳

Today we’re highlighting Evan! ☀️
Evan shared that serving as Hillel Student Board President has been one of the most meaningful parts of his college experience. Through planning events and leading fellow student leaders, he helped create fun, welcoming spaces that brought the UC Davis Jewish community together. His time at Hillel reinforced the importance of leadership, community, and making every student feel like they belong.

☆ What has been your most meaningful Hillel experience?
“The most meaningful program I’ve participated in through Hillel has been serving as Hillel Student Board President. Planning events including the Super Bowl Party and Matzah Ball while leading my team has produced fun and engaging events for all students in the UC Davis Jewish community.”

☆ What advice would you give younger students about getting involved in Hillel or exploring their Jewish identity?
“I would tell younger students to attend a Hillel Shabbat Dinner or a Hillel Student Board event even if they weren’t previously involved in high school. I found instant friends at Hillel and a community that has supported me since week one of my freshman year. JLF and ILF are also great ways to explore your Jewish identity.”

Throwing it back to Gail’s Picnic at the MU Quad! We had so much fun hanging out with everyone, trying all kinds of pastries, cakes, and fresh fruit, and getting to relax on the lawn between classes. 💐🧺☀️

Today we’re highlighting Emily! 🎉💙
Emily shared that one of the most meaningful parts of her Hillel experience was helping plan Israel Fest. Through Hillel, she discovered new leadership skills, gained confidence in herself, and found a community that encouraged her to embrace her Jewish identity with pride. Her time at Hillel became a place where she could grow, lead, and feel at home.

☆ What has been your most memorable Hillel experience?
“The most memorable event I’ve participated in through Hillel was Israel Fest. Hillel gave me the opportunity to help plan and execute the event and supported me every step of the way. Hillel showed me that I could lead in ways I didn’t even know I was capable of and made me feel proud of who I am.”

☆ What advice would you give younger students about getting involved in Hillel or exploring their Jewish identity?
“Don’t be afraid to get involved. It is so valuable to have a Jewish community on campus, and my biggest regret of college is not getting involved with Hillel earlier. Hillel offers so many opportunities and a great support system that is hard to find elsewhere on campus. Try your best to come to Shabbats and events, take advantage of the opportunities they offer, and make Hillel your second home.”

🌟 Meet Jilian Bar-or, Hillel at Davis and Sacramento’s new Development Director! 🌟

Jilian brings two decades of experience in education, Jewish nonprofit leadership, fundraising, and community engagement to Hillel at Davis and Sacramento.

Jilian joins Hillel after 12 years at Shalom School in Sacramento, where she served first as Advancement Director and most recently as Head of School, helping significantly grow and strengthen the school’s fundraising efforts along the way. At the heart of Jilian’s work is a belief that great fundraising starts with authentic relationships, meaningful storytelling, and helping people feel deeply connected to a shared mission.

And for Jilian, joining Hillel is a bit of a full-circle moment. 💙 Her own Hillel journey began when she was an undergraduate at UC Berkeley and later a graduate student at UC Davis. Hillel helped shape her Jewish identity, sense of belonging, and path to becoming a Jewish professional.

Originally from Los Angeles, Jilian has called the Davis-Sacramento region home since 2004. In her free time, you can find her spending time with her husband and teenage daughter on their “farm” in West Davis, taking a Pilates class, or finding any excuse she can to get to the ocean. 🌊

She is thrilled to help strengthen Jewish student life across Davis and Sacramento.

Please join us in welcoming Jilian to the Hillel team! 🎉

Today we’re highlighting רינה! רינה shared that one of her most memorable experiences with Hillel was participating in the August 2023 Perspectives trip, where she had the opportunity to visit Israel for the first time and learn more about the region’s history, culture, and identity. Through Hillel, she found a deeper connection to her Jewish identity and a community that showed her the strength, resilience, and support that exists within Jewish communities around the world.

☆ What lesson from your Hillel community will you carry with you after graduation?

“I have learned that the Jewish people are incredibly resilient and are strongly committed to supporting and nurturing young Jewish people. I learned that no matter where I am, whether in the most urban centers of the world or the most rural corners, I will be able to find community, support, and HaShem’s presence in my life.”

☆ What advice would you give younger students about getting involved in Hillel or exploring their Jewish identity?

“Through Hillel, I participated in the August 2023 Perspectives trip, which was one of the most eye-opening educational experiences that I have had in college, even though it was in a foreign country rather than a classroom. It was such a privilege to visit Israel for the first time and learn so much about geopolitics, culture, and identity in the region. The memories I made from this trip will last for a lifetime. Thank you to everyone at Hillel who made this possible for me, particularly our former Israel Fellow Orit Izilov.”
