What factors influenced your family's decision to settle in their current country, and are there commonalities with the circumstances prompting individuals to undertake hazardous migrations in pursuit of a better life? Let's talk.

The journey of Rossanna and Widman began in the Guatemalan village of San Juan La Laguna, on the turquoise Lake Atitlan where they met. It ended in the murky waters of the Rio Grande.

"Why is this needed? Here's a scenario that just happened in Yolo County, CA. On June 6, farm workers were harvesting tomatoes. Temperatures had hit 105 degrees. Several of the workers started to experience symptoms of heat stress. One worker even felt the severe warning signs of cold shivers and lack of sweat. Six workers decided it was too dangerous to keep working. "

Six CA farm workers were fired after leaving work in 105° heat. CA has life-saving outdoor heat protection laws on the books, but the problem is ag employers don't always comply.

"Patient Audel Cruiz has visited The Willow Clinic twice in the last year. With foot problems caused by diabetes, Cruiz told the attending physician, Dr. David Betting, that the pain makes it hard to sleep. Betting explained Cruiz’s condition to him, advised him on diet and exercise and prescribed pain medication for the symptoms. Two undergraduates then drove to a nearby pharmacy to pick up the prescription while Cruiz stayed cool inside the clinic’s front office." - by Ken Magri, SN&R Staff, 7/18/2024

"“Mostly, I’ve been silent and lonely,” he said through an Urdu interpreter."
"He and many other detainees are facing increased mental health struggles now that they’re unable to call loved ones on a regular basis, according to attorneys and other advocates. The loss of the program has also hindered many detainees’ ability to communicate with their attorneys or get help from advocates." - Published on July 11, 2024 By Kate Morrissey, Capital & Main

Expensive per-minute fees make calls unaffordable for many migrant detainees, who can earn as little as $1 a day working in ICE facilities.
