Why spend all that time and effort into caring for one animal?

"I can make a difference to that animal and that animal can return to its environment and play a significant role. This is even more crucial for areas that have endangered or threatened species."
-WDN Co-Lead Dr. Jamie Peyton

Last night the Wildlife Disaster Network mobilized to help evacuate 5 raptors from the fires burning around Lake Tahoe. Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, Inc. staff met up with Gold Country Wildlife Rescue to hand off the raptors, which were then picked up by California Raptor Center (CRC) staff Julie Cotton and volunteer Billy Thein in Roseville, who then transported them the rest of the way to the CRC facilities at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. Thanks to the efforts of many individuals, these raptors are safe and receiving top-notch medical care from UC Davis veterinarians Drs. Jamie Peyton, Michelle Hawkins, Eric Johnson, and senior resident Dr. Paula Rodriguez.

This is what WDN is all about. Our network is here for each other and the wildlife who need our help.

WDN first launched in 2020 as a partnership between UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and California Department of Fish and Wildlife. This network is modeled after the Oiled Wildlife Care Network for effective mobilization and response coordination to aid wildlife. It also builds on the pioneering work of Dr. Jamie Peyton, who partnered with CDFW in 2017 to apply an innovative burn treatment - tilapia skins - to the paws of wildlife injured in the Thomas Fire.

With a growing team of wildlife veterinary medical experts, WDN continues to provide life-saving care for animals in distress, including those currently impacted by ongoing wildfires across California.
