Davis Waldorf is an accredited Preschool-8th grade school serving 200 children in Davis, California. We provide an academically rigorous, arts-enriched program with a rich curriculum of language arts, math, science, social studies, foreign language, painting, music, drama, gardening, sports and games, handwork, woodwork, eurythmy and more.

Our deep dive into kindergarten continues with character development and values! Unlike child-directed programs (like Montessori methods), Waldorf kindergartens are child-centered, with the teacher guiding the experiences and activities. The teacher as role model provides a source of imitation for children to internalize others’ actions and behaviors and then interpret them on their own.

Research is catching up to what Waldorf schools have been honing for over a century. It can be a scary shift in perspective, especially in the United States, to hear that children in Waldorf schools are not reading from books, writing out numbers, and using technology. And yet…if you follow ECE literature and conversations, you will see the value of experiential learning and slowing down the approach to academics. This allows learning objectives to be absorbed by young students in a way that carries long-lasting positive academic effects.

Scenes from preschool 🌼 if you were to be a butterfly on the wall in one of our preschool classrooms or on the persimmon tree in the play yard, you would see children busy with practical tasks. You would watch them knead dough, chop vegetables, comb wool rugs, sweep, and fold napkins. You would see them in a circle, raptly listening to their teacher tell them a story verbatim, accompanied by hand movements that build fine motor dexterity. You would see quiet moments, exuberant play, and above all, you would see a deepening curiosity and wonder for the world around them. Not seen: screens, desks, and alphabet worksheets. Don’t worry - those come later 📝 right now, the curriculum is brought through sensations, the environment, and the teachers’ quiet presence nearby

Climbing Rose kindergarteners have had a busy start to the year! Every morning they put on their school aprons, a physical representation of shifting into “school mode” - ready to work and play together. Then they take a walk around campus to awaken their bodies and get out any wiggles before awakening their minds with stories, artistic crafts, counting exercises, and other mindful introductions to academic concepts. Our children are not sitting in front of screens or worksheets in kindergarten, and you may be surprised to know that they are not reading from books either. Their curriculum is lived through their hands, minds, and hearts. This intentional method prepares them to smoothly transition into more traditional academic lessons in first grade and beyond.
