Gorilla Doctors wants to acknowledge the extraordinary efforts of the people working in frontline response for the current human Bundibugyo (Bun-di-BOO-joh) virus disease (commonly referred to as Ebola) outbreak impacting eastern DR Congo and Uganda.

The health and safety of our team and the gorillas we monitor is our top priority as we work closely with Ministries of Health, park partners, and key stakeholders across DR Congo, Uganda, and Rwanda to minimize the risk of disease transmission for people and eastern gorillas.

We will provide updates on our channels as appropriate and you may also consider joining our email list at www.gorilladoctors.org

If you would like to know more about Gorilla Doctors’ response efforts, we’ve published an update on on our blog: gorilladoctors.org/ebola-outbreak-2026-latest/

This , we celebrate one of conservation’s greatest success stories.

Mountain gorillas are the only great ape species whose population is increasing in the wild, a remarkable achievement that led to their downlisting from Critically Endangered to Endangered in 2018.

For the past 40 years, Gorilla Doctors has played a significant role in that recovery. Through hands-on veterinary care for ill and injured wild gorillas, health monitoring, disease prevention, and close collaboration with park authorities and conservation partners, Gorilla Doctors helps give every gorilla the best possible chance to survive and thrive.

From treating life-threatening snare injuries to responding to respiratory disease outbreaks, veterinary medicine has become an essential part of mountain gorilla conservation and a key reason this species has made a comeback once thought impossible.

Join us today in celebrating the people working every day to protect the future of wild gorillas!

40th Anniversary Fun Fact! In celebration of our 40th anniversary, every Friday we're going to share a tidbit about the history of our organization, the health of our gorilla patients, and our team. We begin by introducing you to Leon N., who has been with Gorilla Doctors since 1986. Forty years! Leon manages our regional headquarters in Rwanda.

According to Leon, his favorite part of the job is cooking and he loves gorillas because of everything it has allowed him to accomplish professionally. Give Leon a 'round of applause' in the comments and have a great weekend!
