Today is !
This year's theme, Habitat Restoration, highlights the importance of protecting and restoring the places these remarkable seabirds depend on throughout their lives.
Albatrosses are among the world's most threatened groups of birds, with 21 of the 22 recognized species currently considered at risk by the IUCN. Alongside long-standing conservation challenges, the emergence of highly pathogenic avian influenza has created new threats for many seabird populations around the world.
At the Karen C. Drayer Wildlife Health Center, we're proud to contribute to these global conservation efforts. Drs. Marcela Uhart and Ralph Vanstreels of our Latin America Program have been working closely with the Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP) to help address the impacts of avian influenza on these seabirds, developing guidelines and resources to support wildlife professionals responding to outbreaks.
Protecting albatrosses takes international collaboration and every effort to safeguard their habitats and health helps ensure these iconic ocean travelers have a future.
