As COVID-19 continues to circulate in our community, Paxlovid is an important tool to treat COVID infections. While it's true that some people experience "rebound COVID" after taking Paxlovid--a return of some symptoms and/or a positive test--the benefits of taking Paxlovid far outweigh any drawbacks.

“Health experts say Paxlovid’s rebound effect doesn’t impact every patient or make it any less effective at its job, which is fighting severe illness from Covid. Still, like with so much about the pandemic, you might have some questions: How severe are rebound cases? Why do they happen? How common are they, and should you still feel comfortable taking the drug?

“The answer to that last question is a resounding 'yes,' doctors say. Here’s why, and what else you need to know about Paxlovid rebound cases:”

“The fact that I and a fair number of people who continue to be careful and are fully vaccinated and boosted remain COVID-free tells me that it’s possible we will continue to be that way, so I don’t buy the inevitability argument,” Wachter said in an interview Friday. “On the other hand, there are plenty of people who I know who have been just as careful as I have and have gotten it in the past few months, so I think there’s some randomness to this.”

4. There is no typical long COVID patient

The condition can affect anyone. Although there’s not a “typical” long COVID patient, there are some trends. They have not yet seen any children with severe long COVID symptoms. The largest group is between the ages of 27 and 54. “We are not seeing many older people,” Sandrock said. He noted that most of the patients are generally not obese or diabetic, which are risk factors during the acute phase of the disease. In the beginning, all the patients were unvaccinated because vaccines were not available. Now, they see some vaccinated patients, but not enough to be sure whether vaccines mostly prevent long-haul COVID.

Fatigue is the number one symptom, and exercise and antidepressants help some patients with long COVID. UC Davis Health experts share what they’ve learned about long COVID, the perplexing illness that can follow a COVID-19 infection.

“A virus that shows no signs of disappearing, variants that are adept at dodging the body’s defenses, and waves of infections two, maybe three times a year — this may be the future of Covid-19, some scientists now fear.

“The central problem is that the coronavirus has become more adept at reinfecting people. Already, those infected with the first Omicron variant are reporting second infections with the newer versions of the variant — BA.2 or BA2.12.1 in the United States, or BA.4 and BA.5 in South Africa.

“Those people may go on to have third or fourth infections, even within this year, researchers said in interviews. And some small fraction may have symptoms that persist for months or years, a condition known as long Covid.”

Cases are rising in schools again.

Write Dr. Aimee Sisson and ask her to make Paxlovid available to anyone infected in Yolo County. Doses are languishing on the shelf. If we can treat COVID and prevent transmissions, we should!

If our leaders don’t have the political will to reinstate masking when cases rise, let’s ensure that anyone who needs treatment can access it!

Unfortunately, “public” health has left us all to make individual decisions about our risks and mitigation.

Yolo County’s transmission rate is back up in the red, and Davis’s wastewater levels are rising.

Hospitals are not overwhelmed yet, but Emergency Department waits in Davis are long.

The COVID-19 pandemic is still not over.

Science tells us that we cannot end the pandemic by pretending it is over and ending all precautionary measures.

Unfortunately, US public health policy is currently attending to political and economic needs, not health and safety.

Unless that changes through a massive public outcry, the burden of protection now falls exclusively on individuals. Each person must now make their own calculation of risk for going to work, going to school, shopping in stores, eating at restaurants, day after day after day.

We know this is not how public health works. There’s no ending a pandemic without the general public committing to protect themselves and others. Unfortunately, the US leans hard to the side of individualism, and resistance against sensible, effective anti-transmission measures has been aggressive and unrelenting.

Team SCSCD continues to mask, test, distance, and vaccinate, and we encourage everyone to do so as well.

We know what works to keep COVID in check. The only question is if enough people are willing to do it.
