“In 2019, Max Pugh got a sudden call from the Plum Village Monastery. They wanted to make a short biographical documentary about Thich Nhat Hanh’s life story, because it was believed that he was going to pass away imminently.
Max and I worked on the film together. As soon as we finished the film, the plans to release it were shelved because Thich Nhat Hanh's health miraculously took a turn for the better. It was decided instead to only release the film one hundred days after he passes.
'A Cloud Never Dies' has sat on the shelves in Plum Village ever since. But with the war raging in the Ukraine, the Plum Village monastic elders have decided to release it now, with the hope that Thich Nhat Hanh’s legacy as a peace activist can influence calls for peace.
A delegation from the monastery has hand-delivered this film to the Russian Embassy in Berlin, along with an open letter calling for an end to the violence.
We found making this film about Thich Nhat Hanh’s experiences of war in Vietnam very inspirational, given that he experienced such trauma and suffering, and yet he managed to transform it into healing himself and healing millions of others worldwide.
We hope that 'A Cloud Never Dies' inspires you too. Feel free to write to us to share what it made you think about.
It’s available now for free on YouTube.
