🌱 We’re proud to be featured in a recent article from Prime Time Palm Beach County highlighting an amazing evening of family learning, STEAM, and environmental sustainability!

YEA was honored to be part of this special event alongside Resource Depot, bringing hands-on, eco-friendly activities to children and their families. With 97 attendees from 30 different families, it was a wonderful opportunity to show how environmental education can bring communities together. 🌎💚

From hands-on activities to learning about sustainability and creative ways to reuse materials, the evening was all about making learning fun while inspiring the next generation of environmental stewards!

A big thank you to Prime Time Palm Beach County for highlighting this event and to everyone who helped make it possible. We’re grateful to be part of a community that believes in learning, creativity, and caring for our planet! 🌿

🌺🌿 Meet Roselle! 🌿🌺

Have you heard of Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa)? Also known as Florida cranberry, red sorrel, or Jamaican sorrel, this colorful plant is a fantastic addition to a Florida garden!

While Roselle is not native to Florida — it originally comes from West and Central Africa — it is well adapted to Florida’s warm, sunny climate and is considered a Florida-friendly, low-problem plant. ☀️🌱
And this plant is incredibly versatile! The bright red calyces that develop after the flowers can be used to make:

🍵 Herbal teas and refreshing drinks
🍓 Jams, jellies & syrups
🥧 Sauces, pies & other recipes
🫐 A delicious Florida-style cranberry substitute

Even the young leaves can be used in salads or cooked as greens! 🌿

But Roselle isn’t just useful to people — its beautiful hibiscus-like flowers can also provide resources for pollinators, making it a fun plant for a wildlife-friendly garden. 🐝🦋

Online Exhibit 🌅 Women of the Everglades

In the early 1900s, three influential Florida women, inspired by three different causes, laid the foundation for Everglades conservation.

Feature: Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Queen of the Everglades

“It is a woman’s business to be interested in the environment.”
— Marjory Stoneman Douglas

Marjory Stoneman Douglas (April 7, 1890–May 14, 1998) began advocating for Everglades conservation in the 1920s after joining a group dedicated to creating Everglades National Park. For the following seven decades, she would be instrumental in preventing numerous business and agricultural initiatives from threatening the Everglades with destruction and pollution.

Douglas had a reputation of being a fierce environmental advocate. Her tone was described by writer John Rothchild as being able to “tame the rowdiest of the local stone crabbers, plus the developers and the lawyers on both sides.”
