Event: Outing - South River, Waynesboro, VA - Friday, May 15, 2026
When: Friday-Sunday, May 15-17, 2026 Where: South River, Waynesboro, Virginia Outing Coordinator: Tom Barners
Meeting Time/Location: Please let Tom know if you plan to participate in this outing so he can share more specific trip logistics information with you.
Species of Interest: Rainbow and brown trout. Equipment Needed: Recommend 4-5-6 weight of rods with floating lines as well as Euro nymphing rods if you have one. Chest waders with felt and/or pins for the soles on the boots. The river bottom is mostly a cobblery bottom and easy to wade, but pins would be good for the adventurous of us that would like to explore more remote streams in the area. Recommend at least a 7 and a half foot leader with situations where you would want to go up to 9 feet. Bring tippet material ranging from 1X for streamers up to 7X for small dry flies and midges depending on what you are casting. Recommended Flies: Bring a good selection caddis and sulfurs patterns for both nymphs and dry flies. Wooly buggers, drakes and even small Clouser minnows in the 2-3” range can work. License Required: Virginia freshwater fishing license and trout license are required. As nonresidents, if you don’t have an annual fishing license already, recommend you purchase the 5day license as opposed to the one day as its cheaper than getting several one day non-resident licenses. Other Trip Logistics and Fishing Information: Plan on fishing Friday afternoon/evening, all day on Saturday, and Sunday morning before heading home. We will meet at 1:30 lunch in Waynesboro for the South River trip on Saturday, May 17th with the specific restaurant still to be selected. We will also plan for group dinners on Friday and Saturday nights at a local restaurant. Strongly recommend making lodging reservations sooner than later as mid-May is pushing into graduation season and there are a number of colleges and universities in that area of Virginia. There are lots of hotels and B&B’s around Waynesboro as well as KOA campgrounds and National Park campgrounds. For more information on fishing the South River, go to The Perfect Fly Store’s website at: https://perfectflystore.com/your-streams/fly-fishing-south-river-virginia/. Safety: Safety is a paramount concern on all FSFF sponsored outings. On all FSFF sponsored outings, please be safe out there as it is your responsibility to stay within your capabilities and practice water safety at all time. Check with the above listed outing coordinator for more information on the fishing conditions if you have any concerns or questions. If boating, always wear your PFD and if water temperatures are below 60 degrees F, have a plan to protect yourself from cold water immersion hazards should you fall in. Liability Waiver: It is mandatory that any trip attendees of this trip sign the FSFF Liability Waiver and submit them to Frank Bowne, FSFF Membership Coordinator. You can sign the waiver online or print and mail it in. Trash Removal: And please remember we are asking all outing participants to try and pick up five pieces of trash during each outing.
