Grassroots Education Nepal (GEN)

Grassroots Education Nepal (GEN) GEN is registered with the US Internal Revenue Service as a 501(C)(3) not-for-profit charity.

Grassroots Education Nepal (GEN) was established to help Mikey Medium English School (MMES) in the remote village of Bauniya in far western Nepal achieve its dream: high-quality education for both boys and girls, those with means and those without. GEN is guided by a 14-member Board of Directors focused on two major priorities: to ensure MMES has the means to educate as many impoverished children

from the village of Bauniya as possible and to help put the school on a self-sustaining path. When GEN was established, MMES had 48 students, kindergarten through class 2; three teachers; a rented concrete building; and no bathroom. Today, the school has 300 students (the maximum), prekindergarten through class 8; 17 staff members; 10 permanent classrooms; bathrooms; a computer lab; an early childhood learning center; and a small library-office. GEN provides 50 scholarships each year for students in need—half of whom are girls—covering tuition, books and uniforms. We believe that through education comes hope--for the children, their families, the community, and the world.
