Once again, the Maryland General Assembly is considering legalizing Physician Assisted Su***de. The bill is being supported by multiple representatives of Montgomery County so we have put together a petition for Montgomery County residents to sign and show their opposition to this dangerous legislation. Today, at a press conference with Senate President Bill Ferguson, it was announced that the Physician Assisted Su***de Bill, or the End of Life Option Act/Medical Aide in Dying, did not have enough votes to make it out of committee.

The proposal would have allowed Maryland residents who are likely to die within six months to request a prescription for drugs that they could take to initiate their death.

Today at the Maryland Senate Press Conference, President Ferguson gave an update on the status of the End-of-Life Option bill stating, “We will not be taking a vote this year. It does not appear that we have the votes to pass it in the Senate so we will not be moving forward on that issue.”

Later in the press conference, Chairman Smith indicated in depth conversations with constituents made some Senators unwilling to move forward with supporting the bill.

Many people engaged on this issue this year, either through letter writing, providing testimony at the hearings, participating in our lobby day, or praying from your heart. They had the votes to pass this bill, and your efforts changed their minds. Never underestimate the power you have to influence our elected officials and the laws they pass in our state.

SB 443, The End of Life Option Act, was today’s grassroots effort for opposition testimony in the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee.

More than 100 people signed up Thursday to testify for and against Maryland's End of Life Act, which would legalize medical aid in dying.
