On Tuesday, June 9, during the Board of Commissioners meeting, the Town of Davidson announced the appointment of Austin Nantz as its new Town Manager, effective July 1, 2026. Austin has served as Assistant Town Manager since 2021 and brings nearly 30 years of experience in local government administration, strategic planning, financial management, human resources management, and organizational leadership. Austin will replace Jamie Justice, who is retiring with over 10 years with the Town of Davidson. His retirement is effective June 30.

“We are confident that Austin’s experience, leadership, and collaborative approach are the right fit for the next leader for Davidson,” said Mayor Rusty Knox. “Austin has been instrumental in advancing the Town’s affordable housing initiatives, strengthening financial transparency and budgeting practices, and guiding strategic planning efforts that align departmental operations with the Board’s long-term vision.”

In her role as Assistant Town Manager, Austin provided strategic direction and operational oversight across multiple municipal departments, including Affordable Housing, Economic Development, Human Resources, Public Works, Parks and Recreation, and Finance. Austin led the public facilities project resulting in the renovated Town Hall/Community Center and Public Safety Buildings. She has also served as Acting Town Manager when needed, working closely with the Town Manager and Board of Commissioners to advance the Town’s strategic plan priorities.

Austin is known for building consensus among elected officials and staff, fostering collaboration across departments, and engaging community stakeholders to support thoughtful, data-driven decision-making.

“I am humbled and honored by the Board’s confidence in selecting me to serve as Davidson’s next Town Manager,” said Austin Nantz. “Davidson is an extraordinary community with an engaged and thoughtful Board of Commissioners, an exceptional management team and staff, dedicated nonprofit and community partners, and residents who care deeply about the future of the town. I am genuinely excited for the opportunity to build upon the strong foundation already in place and continue the momentum we have created together.”

Prior to joining the Town of Davidson, Austin served in several leadership roles with the City of Charlotte, including Administrative Services Director for the City’s Innovation and Technology Department, Budget Manager for the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS), and Administrative Services Director for the Charlotte Fire Department.

A native of Sanford, North Carolina, Austin holds a Master of Public Administration from the University of Georgia and a Bachelor of Arts in Politics from Converse University. She is an International City/County Management Association (ICMA)-Credentialed Manager and is active in professional and community organizations, including the North Carolina City and County Management Association and the ICMA.

The Town Manager position is the chief executive officer for the Town, reporting to the Mayor and Board of Commissioners, and oversees the day-to-day operations of the town government. Town of Davidson, NC

In 1936 the Board of Education applied to the Federal Emergency Administration of Public Works (FEA) for funding for a gymnasium behind the existing Davidson School building. The gym was one of three projects assigned to architect Willard G. Rogers (1863-1947) in northern Mecklenburg County in 1937 (Rogers also designed and oversaw construction of the classroom building at the Ada Jenkins Center).

For the Davidson School, Rogers designed a classically inspired gymnasium building with arched windows and solid masonry walls, large enough for basketball, the main floor surrounded on three sides with built-in wooden bleachers. The Gym is a local historic landmark currently being renovated as the Town’s first indoor recreation center, set to open in June 2026.

Eviction records can now be removed from the public index after seven years. Housing advocates say the measure literally opens new doors for renters plagued by long-settled issues on their rental histories.

Potts-Sloan-Beaty Project Bi-Weekly Update
May 1, 2026
In an effort to ensure that residents are regularly updated and remain informed, the Town of Davidson is going to send out regular updates about the project to interested and affected residents, including the Davidson West Community Group, and Legacy on the West Side.

This project is being managed by NCDOT, and the Town may not have new information to share, but we will continue to share air quality monitoring and project contact data on a regular basis (every two weeks). The Town is also committed to sharing important project updates in a timely manner.

NCDOT reports the following construction-related activities as of May 1, 2026:

1. The widened sidewalk along Sloan Street is mostly complete, except for a few panels with hydrants to be moved. The design called for the sidewalk to connect to Roosevelt Wilson Park. Sidewalk in front of the Sloan Street properties near Griffith Street will stay in place, but be 5 feet in width.

2. At the request of the Town, NCDOT has deferred the sidewalk construction along Potts Street until the detour is removed, since the traffic control was exacerbating the detour.
