Today we mourn the tragic loss of Ryan Hitchcock, Branden Colvin and Daniel Prien. Our hearts are with the families, loved ones and everyone affected by the devastating events that took place at 324 Main st.

No one should have to question whether their home is safe. This tragedy is a painful reminder that safe, decent and affordable housing is not a luxury. It is a basic human need.

As a community, we must continue pushing for investment in housing, stronger protections and solutions that ensure tragedies like this never happen again.

Happy Affordable Housing Month!

A huge thank you to the City of Rock Island Government for recognizing Affordable Housing Month with an official proclamation. We're grateful for the city's commitment to expanding safe, decent and affordable housing across Rock Island and the Quad Cities. 🏠

🏠Mayor Ashley Harris issued a proclamation during Monday night's City Council meeting recognizing May as Affordable Housing Month. Accepting it was Quad Cities Housing Council Executive Director Leslie Kilgannon (left) and Office Administrator Melanie Jordan. Kilgannon said the Housing Council funds affordable housing efforts throughout the Quad Cities.

"Thank you for designating Affordable Housing Month," she said. "We really do need to shine a light on not just the desperate need - which is growing in the United States and regionally - but let's focus on the solutions. There are plenty of ways that we can address housing instability and homelessness more effectively as we work together."

The proclamation reads, "Safe, decent and affordable housing for individuals and families in our community and across the Quad Cities region is important. Housing challenges do not stop at state lines, and as a bi-state community spanning Iowa and Illinois, regional collaboration is essential to creating real, lasting solutions. Affordable Housing Month is an opportunity to raise awareness, strengthen partnerships and recommit to ensuring that everyone in the Quad Cities has access to housing that is safe, decent and affordable for them."
