The original global kite fly, founded by Jane Parker-Ambrose, Larry Ambrose and Michael Steltzer in the mid-1980s under the real threat and specter of nuclear annihilation, continues to be a worldwide celebration of unity and humanity. Fly a kite on Sunday and share your experience.

FIREWORKS Season. First you must Obey local laws. If fireworks are not legal where you live, do not use them. (The only fireworks legal in Iowa are the ones you can purchase in Iowa stores, such as sparklers, poppers and “snakes.” Roman candles and firecrackers are illegal.) Remember, there are plenty of official fireworks displays for you to enjoy for free, and at a safe distance.
Use fireworks outdoors only.
Always have water handy.
Only use fireworks as intended. Don’t try to alter or combine them.
Never relight a “dud” firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.
Use common sense. Spectators should keep a safe distance from the shooter and the shooter should wear safety glasses.
Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Have a “designated shooter.”
Only persons over the age of 12 should be allowed to handle sparklers of any type.
Do not ever use homemade fireworks or illegal explosives–they can kill you! Report illegal explosives to the fire or police department in your community.

In case you missed the 8/22/12 article in the Quad City Times....

The Quad Cities Family Fun & Kite Festival has been canceled for this year, due to a lack of funding and operational support, festival director James Patten said.

The festival was started by Patten with help from community leader Terry Lunardi. The first three years, the festival brought kite flyers from around the county to Centennial Park in Davenport to crowds reaching more than 5,000. Sponsorships allowed for 1,000 kite kits to be available for kids to build, color and fly during the weekend.

Patten also formed the QC Kite Club in conjunction with the festival to promote participation by others interested in kites, kite building and kite flying but the club struggled to gain members over its three-year life.

The festival will evaluate the possibility of future years, but will require more organizational support from individuals or a partnership.
