Urban Exposure Independent Film Project

Urban Exposure Independent Film Project Urban Exposure Independent Film Project, offers film programs highlighting the fundamentals of filmmaking, writing, directing, acting for film & editing.

Urban Exposure Summer Film Program is a ten-week summer program for young people highlighting filmmaking fundamentals, including writing, directing, and editing. Under the supervision of experienced filmmakers, high school and college-aged students work with one another to realize their creative visions and produce their own films from start to finish. By the end of the program, each participant w

rites, films, edits, and presents their films to the community at a premiere event held at the Figge Art Museum. Studies show that participation in programs like Urban Exposure benefits youth’s social, behavioral, and cognitive development. Yet, these programs are often the first to go when schools are financially strained. Because of that, there is a great need for underserved young people in our community to have a positive and proactive outlet for self-expression. Azubuike and its Urban Exposure film program provide youth the opportunity to do just that in a healthy and culturally rich environment. Urban Exposure also offers a two week Acting For Film Workshop and a one-day Production Crew Bootcamp,

About the Acting for Film Workshop

The two weeks (twice a week) acting workshop allows students to participate in a short training that requires full involvement in learning the craft of film acting. Production Crew Bootcamp

The 1-day production crew training is a boot camp-style workshop. The filmmakers take students through the entire process in just one day. Students will learn how to handle the equipment properly, work on a film set, production terminology, essential film crew titles, set protocol, and more. Open Auditions

Urban Exposure filmmakers look for local actors to act in their short films. We have a three-day open casting call for actors of all types and ages. Actors are asked to bring a current photo, bio, and a prepared scene. Actors may audition any of the three days, they receive audition updates by sending their contact information to [email protected]

The Doris & Victor Day Foundation, Iowa Art Council, Quad City Arts Dollars funded our 2020 program. Also, donations from our Facebook Friends and support from the Figge Arts Museum help make the program a success.

We are saddened to report that Malcolm-Jamal Warner, best known for his role as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, has passed away at the age of 54.

A staple of Black television in the ‘80s and ‘90s, Warner became a household name as Theo, the quick-witted only son of the Huxtable family. We fell in love with him every Thursday night at 8 p.m., watching him grow from a 14-year-old teen to a 22-year-old young man over the course of eight seasons. From the iconic Gordon Gartrell shirt to his dyslexia diagnosis, Theo’s storylines, though fictional, reflected our own coming-of-age experiences, making him feel like family.

But his impact stretched far beyond playing Theo. By his late teens, Warner was already directing music videos for artists like New Edition and Special Ed. He later went on to direct episodes of The Cosby Show, All That, Kenan & Kel, and Malcolm & Eddie. In 2023, Warner launched the podcast Not All Hood with cohosts Weusi Baraka and Candace Kelley to address mental health in the Black community.

He died by drowning while swimming during a family vacation in Costa Rica, according to PEOPLE. His legacy lives on through his family and daughter, and in the stories he helped shape and the hearts he touched.

May he rest in peace.♥️
