This week was about showing my Air Force DEP members that volunteering is a big part of your USAF career.

We have been pretty quiet since the end of March. Both Hannah & I tested positive for Covid and it put a stop to a lot that we were doing. Luckily, we are back on track, sort of.

We may not be here weekly or even monthly but we have been lucky to meet the great folks at Humble Dwellings here in the Quad Cities. They have an amazing mission and it is one we love to be a part of.

Their Mission:
To restore dignity and hope to those less fortunate by transforming their living space into a warm and inviting home using donated gently used furniture and household items.

A few weeks ago we moved some items into a storage unit and met one of the individuals from the organization and about a week later we were able to assist them. We turned an empty 2 bedroom house into a fully furnished home for a family in need.

We look forward to the relationship we have built with this organization.

Week 25 & 26 - Giving from the Hart

It’s been a busy long couple of weeks and we underestimated how much week 25 would contain.

So, what was week 25?
Downsizing our closet and donating to a company who could use the items we weren’t using.

We managed to gather almost 7 full bags of clothes, shoes, hats, etc and hopefully those items find a good home.

And now week 26...
I recently had the opportunity to brief a high school FFA class and met the instructor. We talked about upcoming events they were doing, donation opportunities and other ways we could support their program.

The way we chose this week was to donate to their upcoming banquet to support their awards program and overall requirements for the event. And of course, however else they needed to use the donation.

Week 24 - Giving from the Hart

While on vacation, we were thanked for serving our country. And because of that, part of our family events were FREE. 🤔 💡

At dinner tonight we we’re almost done eating and an Army Veteran and his wife sat down to eat. And that is where the “giving back” was decided.

Someone earlier in the day made our day better because we served our country. Therefore we made another Veteran’s day by taking care of his bill.

Week 23 - Giving from the Hart

Doing something to help others is great. Doing it as a family is better. But doing it with multiple families makes a bigger impact. The more people who see and do good things will show others that good people still exist.

This week we partnered with the other Air Force recruiters in the area and supported a local high school pet supply donation.

Local pets will be able to enjoy a few beds, a variety of chew toys, treats, 55lbs of food and additional non food/toy items.

Week 22 - Giving from the Hart

We are at it again with another donation. But this time it’s not necessarily a local donation. Or an immediately noticed giving.

We decided a small amount could have a big impact on a child’s life by donating this week to the St Jude’s Research Hospital.

According to acco.org 15,780 kids (0-19 y/o) are diagnosed with cancer. That means approximately 1 in 285 children will be diagnosed with cancer before turning 20.

After hearing the St Jude commercials on the radio, it was easily decided we would choose this organization as our “giving back” this week.

Week 21(+2 days) - Giving from the Hart

Sorry we are a few days behind. It has been a busy last few days.

But... when the opportunity strikes and you are given the chance to do the right thing, you do it. And we did just that.

Chick Fil A was the perfect location for week 21+ to take place.

We logged into the app to use points and saw the DONATE NOW button. Immediately paused what we were doing and made the donation.

There are too many people who are currently affected by Covid-19, snow storms, and various other disasters. A small donation was the least we could do to “give back.”

Week 20 - Giving from the Hart

The last 20 weeks have been nothing short of amazing. The opportunities we have had to give back, encourage other, and have people participate along with us.

As you have seen, each week is a little different as we look for different ways to give back. Whether it’s to a large amount of people, a school fundraiser or changing a holiday for a family.

This week we saw an opportunity to help a local school fundraiser by eating at one of our favorite steakhouses and they donated a portion of the funds to their organization.

What also made this event special was, when we went to dinner I was wearing my Air Force camo uniform and was told at the end of dinner that our check was taken care of. Therefore, not only did our meal help the fundraiser, but so did theirs!

Week 19 - Giving from the Hart

When opportunities to Give Back are literally standing right in front of you, take advantage.

We recently went to the mall and saw a kiosk in the middle of the walkway, we were confused and that immediately sparked a conversation.

Due to Covid-19 and the current weather, Girl Scout troops are not having stands outside selling cookies like normal. Northpark Mall has granted them the opportunity to have a warm and safe location inside.

They are currently not only selling cookies but also taking donations to support the Riverbend Troop Support which donates the boxes to military members in the local area.

Of course, we couldn’t just talk without helping out. We left a mark by not buying cookies for ourselves but donating a few boxes to support their cause.

Week 18 - Giving from the Hart

As everyone knows, Covid has caused lots of issues with school and one of those is having enough supplies.

This week we partnered with the Air Force Recruiters in the Quad Cities and collectively donated 20 school supply care packages from Staples.

These care packages will be distributed to local elementary schools in the QCs.

Week 17 - Giving from the Hart

Being homeless is not something I wish upon anyone and hate to see people spend their lives that way. But, just because they are homeless, they still deserve to be taken care of.

In the month of January, in Iowa, and a snow storm in the next 2 days, not having to travel to get food could make a huge difference in someone’s life.

After the Packers vs Buccaneers game, a trip to Walmart gave us a last minute decision on how we can Give Back. Some groceries, toiletries and a few dollars out of our pocket was the best way to make this week successful.
