Sharing the Harvest Community Farm

Sharing the Harvest Community Farm Sharing the Harvest Community Farm is a non-profit hunger-relief farm located at the Dartmouth YMCA. The generosity of others is at the core of our existence.

Sharing the Harvest is a nonprofit, volunteer-driven community farm that was established in 2006 as a grassroots response to hunger at the local level. The farm’s mission is to alleviate hunger, promote volunteerism, and provide agricultural education on the south coast of Massachusetts. Sharing the Harvest is embarking on its 14th season growing food for donation to those in need. Both New Bedfor

d and Fall River are among the ten poorest municipalities in Massachusetts, with some of the highest concentrations of hunger in the state. In these cities, one in three children lives in poverty, and in Bristol County, one in five children is food insecure. We rely on volunteers to fulfill our mission to alleviate hunger. Since 2006, volunteers have contributed 64,000 hours of service in 25,000 visits to the farm! This has made it possible for us to donate 547,000 pounds of produce to those in need. It is only through the support of thousands of volunteers as well as public and private donations that we are able to serve our community. Thank you!

On our final day of the 2025 volunteer season at STH Community Farm, a fantastic group of 25 employees from DePuy Synthes, Raynham, along with 9 volunteers from the local community and M.O.L.I.F.E., took part in planting garlic. This task included separating garlic bulbs into individual cloves, as well as planting the garlic cloves into their beds in B Field. The garlic cloves will remain underground all winter under straw mulch, and next spring, we’ll see them sprout! The bulbs will be ready to harvest by late July.

This morning, we…

🧄 Planted 9 beds of garlic (in much less than two hours - impressive work!)
🍓 Weeded and pruned the strawberry plants
🫑 Pulled the expired pepper plants and began removing landscape fabric

What a morning of hard work and dedication to these tasks! Thank you all for enthusiastically braving the windy and overcast morning to help us with this very important, and successful, garlic planting. We appreciate you all joining us for a second time this growing season!

Yesterday, employees from BlueCross BlueShield Massachusetts visited STH Farm and worked with us in the fields and greenhouse during their annual Service Day. Over the course of the full work day, this team…

🎃 Washed and stacked butternut squash in the greenhouse
🪱 Shoveled pathways to build 3 sturdy raised beds in the hoophouse
🧑‍🌾 Harvested and bunched beets
🧄 Sorted large and small garlic bulbs
🧼 Cleaned the Dartmouth YMCA kitchen

With the help of this team and their many hands and dedicated work ethic, the greenhouse, field hoophouse, and kitchen were drastically different than when they first set foot on the farm. The butternut squash team worked relentlessly to see their task through and help every squash appear spotless. The shoveling team dug pathways while the rain poured outside the hoophouse, raindrops sliding down the plastic roof. We were grateful to the beet harvesting team for helping us finish off our final crop left to harvest this week - which was all distributed on Thursday evening through United Way’s Mobile Market. Thank you to this spectacular team for their drive and willingness to lend a hand at STH Farm during the annual Day of Service event.

🍅 Pulled up all tomato plants, trellising poles, and landscape fabric from 6 beds. We also gleaned all the remaining cherry and green tomatoes.

🌱 Hand weeded 4 beds of beets, as well as scuffle hoed several beds of fall crops.

🫘 Gleaned and pulled up all plants from the wax bean bed.

🎃 At the wash station, group members washed bins, scrubbed butternut squash and summer squash, and packaged up wax beans.

Today, numerous UMass Dartmouth sports teams, students, faculty, staff, and alumni joined us in the STH Community Farm fields for the annual 9/11 Service & Remembrance Day. This important day of service invites us to remember the lives of those lost in 9/11, and to honor the families and survivors who inspired this nationally-recognized Day of Service.

Today, UMass Dartmouth helped with our major butternut squash harvest. In just a few hours, they…

✂️ Clipped all butternut squash vines

🎃 Piled butternut squash, acorn squash, and Long Island Cheese pumpkins into crates or baskets spread throughout the field

💪 Unpacked and stacked all the butternut squash into the greenhouse to cure

🚜 Removed black plastic and drip tape from the butternut squash fields

To all our volunteer leaders, thank you for your support and leadership. This major service day ran so smoothly from start to finish with your group guidance. To all the athletes, students, staff, faculty, and alumni that took time out of their Sunday to take part in this service day and brave the rain and mud - thank you all! We expect to share with the community approximately 10,000 pounds of butternut squash this year. We truly couldn’t have accomplished this without you!

Yesterday morning, a spectacular team of employees from Citizens’ Bank worked with us in the field. This team…

🍅 Harvested cherry tomatoes and green slicing tomatoes
🌾 Moved butternut squash vines out of the tall grasses, in preparation for their upcoming harvest

These tasks were challenging to say the least! The tomato plants were pulled and carried down the 200-foot beds into piles for the tractor to take away, and the volunteers were able to clear 2 beds in less than an hour. They also harvested over 72 pounds of green tomatoes. Great work, and thank you all for your time, enthusiasm, and hard work yesterday!
