Alexander Shaw is a PCV serving in Peru. Our volunteer Pam selected English and Spanish books for his students. His box just arrived, and he sent us this note and photos of his students opening the box. "I am working with the English teacher at the secondary school to promote leisure reading with our students. We received 25 English-language books, so we decided to introduce the new library additions class by class, allowing each class to check out the books for 2 weeks to start. The Bone series were the most coveted. Next step is to share the Spanish-language books with the primary school. Please thank Pam for me!"

JT Jenkins, a PCV in Nepal, received a box of books selected by volunteer Donna. "I received the book package from Darien about two weeks ago, and have implemented a rotational library system with the kids at my school.

A warm thank you to Donna, who packed this wonderful assortment of books for us – I've been enjoying reading stories to the kids about characters from my own childhood, like the Berenstein Bears and Pete the Cat. It's been a wonderful, connective experience, and you all have my gratitude for helping to facilitate it."

Gonzalo Díaz is an English as a Foreign Language Professor in Tucumán, Argentina. He wrote, "In the outskirts of Villa Carmela, resources are scarce, and the public classroom is the only place where these students have any exposure to English or foreign educational materials...Our classrooms severely lack physical, authentic English-language materials [and visual aids]. These materials bring the language to life and provide a window to the world for students who have never left their province."

He received his box of books from us late last month. "I am so happy to inform you the box has arrived. I am sharing some pictures of an event we held for teachers, it was a teacher training session and there we gave away some of the books."

We're happy that our hand-selected books can make a difference in their classrooms!

Celeste Noraian, a Youth Health Facilitator with Peace Corps Panamá, sent this note and photos for her recently received shipment of books, selected by our volunteer Heather. "I wanted to sincerely thank you and Darien Book Aid for your book donations. With your support and a few other organizations, we were able to build a community library filled with health resources, fiction and nonfiction books, and English-language books. It has quickly become a welcoming space where community members can read, learn, and gather together.

Your contribution helped make this project possible. Attached are some photos. Thank you for inspiring English learning and helping create a resource that will benefit people for years to come."

Brooke Hall, a PCV in Kenya, shared that she had received a box of books, selected by our volunteer Claudia. "I am excited to share and reach out to you with extreme gratitude because we have received our box of books from Darien Book Aid. We received a wonderfully packed box of books chosen by Claudia. I have delivered them to Ochara Primary and Junior Secondary School in West Seme, Kisumu County, Kenya. We are so appreciative and the kids are so excited to start reading. Personally, I was excited for the atlas; I think it will bring more understanding of how vast and different Kenya and the US are. Below is a picture of me with Madam Agnes receiving the books."

He sent us this note and photos celebrating the opening of the village library: "You sent me a box of books last year. My library in the village just opened and I thought I could give you these photos and video to show what your contribution helped provide for our village. Our volunteer Pam picked out a selection of Spanish books to donate to KILELE in Colombia which, along with the Luena Foundation, is establishing a mobile library along the Yurumanguí River to reach 12 communities without easy access to books. The library will travel through the Yurumanguí River communities, bringing books and reading-engagement activities directly to the children!

In Kibaha, Tanzania, the Arafa Islamic Foundation provides health education, nutrition training, and literacy support to rural mothers and youth. But access to reliable health information is limited, and families cannot afford books on pregnancy, childcare, and first aid.

They shared:

"A book donation will help us start a small health reading corner where women can learn while waiting for clinic services. This will reduce preventable deaths from malnutrition and birth complications."

When our volunteer Heather learned about their need, she carefully selected a collection of health-related books. Last week, those books arrived safely in Tanzania.

The Foundation recently wrote:

"These books will make a real difference for our healthcare workers who serve pregnant mothers and families in our community."
