Darien Book Aid is an all-volunteer non-profit organization that works to improve education and literacy by donating books to communities around the world.

Books are hand-selected by our volunteers and are mailed free of charge.

Books from Darien are now making a difference in Uganda at Ziribanda Children Ministry and Genesis Nursery and Primary School.

Founder Isa Bukenya wrote:

"The children were filled with excitement when they saw the books. Many of them have never had the opportunity to own or read such beautiful books, so this gift means far more than words can express. Your support is helping us create a love for reading and learning, and it is bringing joy and hope to the children every day. Please accept our heartfelt thanks to everyone at Darien Book Aid and to the volunteer who carefully selected the books for us. We truly appreciate the time, effort, and love that went into preparing this donation."

Amber Dickinson, a PCV in Togo, received a box of books packed by our volunteers Heather and Lucy. She sent us this photo of the book gift presentation during a recent school assembly.

"My high school director asked me to extend a big thank you to you and your team for the generous book donation. We were able to share the books with the students during our start-of-the-year assembly, and they were very much appreciated.

I’ve attached a photo from the assembly so you can see the students with the books.

Thank you again for your generosity and for supporting our school!"

It looks like our book donation is popular with the kids at Ikizu B. Primary School in Bunda, Mara Tanzania!

English teacher Aziza Ngume wrote:

"I would like to sincerely thank you for the wonderful books you sent for the students at Ikizu B. We are very grateful for your generosity and support. The books are so beautiful and engaging, and the students are really enjoying reading the stories. They are excited to explore the books, and it is wonderful to see their enthusiasm for reading and learning. I have attached some pictures of the students enjoying the books. I hope you will enjoy seeing the impact of your kind support. Thank you once again for helping us bring more joy, knowledge, and opportunities to these students through books."

Students at Podorašje Primary School in Srebrenik, Bosnia and Herzegovina, were so excited about the books we donated to their school!

English teacher Zemira Mehmedović wrote: "These books will make a great difference in our school and help our students improve their English reading skills and develop a love for reading."

English is a compulsory subject, but the school had a very small collection of English-language books. Now the kids have more opportunities to practice reading and improve their language skills!

Nikolai Schweber, a PCV in Armenia, received a box of books that our volunteer Claudia selected for him. He has set up a Library in the English Resource Center at his school and shared these photos.
"We have finally opened our English Resource Center, including the books you all sent us. Here are pictures of a few of our students with the books. They are using them for an extra credit book report project. Thank you, and please thank Claudia as well."

Child Survival Aid Ghana contacted us to support their Every Child Must Read Project.

They aim to improve literacy rates among children in rural Ghana by providing access to age-appropriate reading materials, establishing reading clubs, and offering literacy workshops for students and teachers. They target regions with inadequate educational infrastructure, supporting both boys and girls, especially marginalized groups, to promote gender equality in education and break the cycle of poverty.

Our volunteer Carri selected and packed up the books for them. They recently sent these photos of the books being delivered to Unique Royal School.

We were happy to support their mission and directly impact students in rural Ghana!

School is back in session in Fiji after a 2-week winter break, and PCV Claudia Huang was excited to share this book shipment with Yavulo Kindergarten teachers, Mrs Kumar and Mrs Biu. Our volunteer Claudia selected the books.

Seth McLaughlin is a PCV in Ghana. He received his box of books, selected by our volunteer Wendy.
"I was thrilled to receive my package today at our post's 65th anniversary celebration in the capital city of Accra. I didn't see a date on the box to indicate exactly when it came in. Two other Volunteers' boxes were there as well; hopefully you hear from them soon.

I have a long journey back to my site so I will leave the box unopened until I return and take some photos of them in use. In the meantime, here are some photos of me holding the box in African fashion in front of the celebration poster. I tried going hands-free in the second pic-- no books were harmed."

Seón Tromble, a Peace Corps Volunteer in Thailand, was excited to receive his box of books selected by our volunteer Donna. He sent this note: "I’d like to give a huge thank you to Donna for choosing the books we received. If you’ll permit me a very nerdy tangent… I just finished a short Dungeons & Dragons campaign. It was my first time filling the role as dungeon master and I was playing with other volunteers in Thailand. One of my friend’s characters was based on “The Little Prince” from the novel by Antoine De Saint-Exupéry. When I opened my Darien Book Aid shipment, The Little Prince was the book at the very top. So while I haven’t unpacked and looked at every book yet, I’ve got a very good feeling about the selection. Also there was a book about an elephant in there and the book has a tail! My co-teachers really like that one. So thank you again for all your work. This is such a boon to my school and community."
