Darien Book Aid is an all-volunteer non-profit organization that works to improve education and literacy by donating books to communities around the world.

Books are hand-selected by our volunteers and are mailed free of charge.

Margaret Thuesen, a PCV in Indonesia, received her box of books selected by our volunteer Wendy Silver. "We received our books and we just opened them! I was so happy to see many books I read growing up that I loved. And a ton of great ones I’ve yet to read. I opened the box with Bu Nanik (my host mom as well as the owner and creator of the library) and two students (and dear friends of mine!) who frequently come to my house and who helped us clean the library.

Thank you so much for the books! I am so so happy to be able to share these with the kids in my neighborhood:). And extra special thank you to Wendy, who filled my request! I love your picks. Also the surprise at the end of seeing the book about 50 famous women was awesome—this book is amazing! And GREAT for empowerment—amazing, wonderful, thank you!"

Many thanks to Yainnix E. and the National Honor Society at Darien High School for organizing a book drive on our behalf!

Yainnix reported, "As one of the leaders of our chapter, I’m responsible for organizing two service projects each year for my group. While researching possible ideas, I came across Darien Book Aid online and thought it would be a great opportunity because of the impact it has on communities around the world."

We are delighted to send the books they collected to students who will truly benefit from their donations!

One book drive can connect children across the country! 📚❤️

Recently, Darien Book Aid donated children’s books to Reading Quest, a nonprofit in New Mexico that supports students reading below grade level.

At the very same time we were selecting their books, we were also unpacking a wonderful collection of books donated by students at Daniel Warren Elementary School in Mamaroneck, NY. Darien Warren has held a book drive on our behalf for the last 16 years!

Many of the books from the Daniel Warren book drive were a perfect match for the children served by Reading Quest. We loved being able to connect these two groups of young readers from across the country through the power of books.

Rayna Dineen, the Executive Director of Reading Quest, wrote: "I ...am completely blown away! Every book is amazing and exactly what our students will love...they are truly the best donation of books we have ever received."

We capped off National Volunteer Week with a Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast for our dedicated group of volunteers!

We were founded 77 years ago as an all-volunteer nonprofit, and since then, more than one thousand volunteers have donated their time and energy to our important mission of improving literacy and education around the world with the free donation of books.

Thank you to ALL of our volunteers for everything that you do! Your volunteer hours have impacted countless people around the world, helping them create brighter futures. Thanks for making a difference!

This National Volunteer Week we are so pleased to honor one of our student volunteers, Alice Selvey, who was recognized by the Community Fund of Darien as one of our town's outstanding volunteers.

We are so grateful to Alice for all that she does for Darien Book Aid, whether she is curating a box of books for one of our overseas recipients, or raising funds for us to purchase new dictionaries and atlases to donate to those in need. Thank you for your dedication and support!
