Our volunteers were joined by the PTA and Staff at Mark Delay School for an after-school workday. We helped spruce up a small garden by weeding and mulching some bushes. The kids also helped our volunteer remove some plants from the planters and replaced them with fall-blooming mums!

We enjoy this partnership and things will be looking great for the fall at both entrances to the school.

How do you fix a cracked jack-o-lantern? With a pumpkin patch!

All jokes aside, pumpkins are more amazing than people realize. They're approximately 90% water and are extremely nutrient-dense, and of course, they make a great decoration for Halloween. Many people don't think twice before throwing away their pumpkins after Halloween, but now the Pumpkin Smash® is spreading throughout the country to help prevent that!

The Pumpkin Smash® is an annual effort by communities to divert pumpkins from landfills by providing locations for residents to drop-off jack-o-lanterns to be composted. It's fun AND great for the planet! So far, 75 different sites have registered to participate.

Find your closest location now so you can plan to smash your pumpkins this year! https://www.scarce.org/pumpkins/

First stop on the Oct garden therapy tour ➡ Oak Trace

We decorated faux pumpkins with dried flowers and leaves, fall napkins, faux leaves and much more. The pumpkins were then placed on a customized mat of leaves.

The work crew at St. John Lutheran Church - Darien, IL Sprout Learning Garden were not sitting down on the job!

There was a lot of action on Saturday...

Our TO DO list:
✅clear the bags of plant material
✅remove trellis vines
✅put artwork away for the season
✅pack up items for the winter
✅collect seed from annuals
✅drain hoses
✅empty rain barrels
✅remove LARGE tree branch from the garden

We did all of that and much more as we packed the shed and set up a little spot for resting in the off season! We decided to leave the marigolds and Mexican sunflowers up for the migrating monarchs and other pollinators storing up for the winter ahead. We also will harvest green bean seeds in a few weeks and complete the vine removal.

Many thanks to the Saturday volunteers and those that helped all season as we built, planted, toiled, harvested and enjoyed the improved learning garden compliments of Environmental Education Association of Illinois and Thrivent Charitable

Onward to season #6!

Crafting fun at Turtle Day "Life in the Pond"!

A table full of plastic caps, some glue and other fun decor led to the creation of several clever turtles and other friends. Some lids with openings became mouths for snapping turtles or turtle shells....the ideas kept coming....

The table dahlia display also became extra pizazz for the creations!
