🌿 Have you seen me? My name is Mile-a-minute. And I live up to it. 😳

🚨 An important invasive plant alert: Mile-a-minute vine has been found in Darien. This fast-growing vine can grow up to 6 inches a day, quickly smothering native plants and shrubs, and can climb trees.

🔎 Know how to spot me: Look for a triangular bright green leaf, tiny prickly barbs on the underside, and a distinctive circular “collar” around the stem at the branches.

🫐 If you find me, act quickly! Pull the vines before the blue berries appear, when birds and small mammals can spread the seeds. Put pulled vines in a trash bag or let them dry completely on a hard surface. Do not compost or take them to the town transfer station.

Think you've spotted Mile-a-minute? Report it to the Connecticut Invasive Plant Working Group so it can be tracked and managed.

🌿 Stewardship in Action! ⛏

It may be quiet in town, but there’s always something happening on the Land Trust’s preserves. 🌳 We recently mowed mugwort at Piacentini Preserve before it could produce seed, helping slow the spread of this invasive plant and giving native species room to thrive.

Speaking of natives, many thanks to for their generous donation! 👏 Our interns, along with our Stewardship Advisor, Juliet Cain, are planting these gorgeous natives at Brendan’s Meadow and Mandel Preserve, adding habitat and food for birds, bees, butterflies and other wildlife. 🐝🦋

From managing invasives to adding native plants, it takes ongoing care and a wonderful community of dedicated partners and volunteers to keep our preserves healthy and thriving. Thank you! 💚

🌿 A big thank you to our summer interns, Frank and Emma! 🙌

From the office to the preserves, Emma and Frank have jumped into every opportunity to help care for Darien's open spaces. 🌳

Frank has been busy installing a trail camera to help us discover who's roaming our preserves 🦌, pitching in on stewardship projects, and along with Emma, getting up at the crack of dawn to monitor water quality. 🌊 Together, they've also tackled the important behind-the-scenes work of digitizing our land records.

Emma has supported our neighbor outreach and has brought her creativity to social media and Celebrate the Land, helping make this year's event even more special. 👩‍🎨
