This past weekend, in a solemn and deeply moving ceremony, Darien Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6933 was officially renamed in honor and memory of Special Warfare Operator Chief (SOC) Brian R. Bill, U.S. Navy, DEVGRU. Brian was an American patriot, a son, a brother, an uncle, a friend, and a warrior who gave his life in defense of our country and the freedoms we hold dear.
Brian R. Bill, an American hero and beloved son of Pat and Michael Parry, was a valiant and exceptional member of the U.S. Naval Special Warfare community. Serving on the front lines in Afghanistan, Brian was killed in action on August 6, 2011, when his U.S. CH-47 Chinook helicopter, call sign Extortion 17, was shot down by a Taliban rocket-propelled gr***de.
The crash killed 38 people, including 30 U.S. military personnel, seven Afghan commandos, one Afghan interpreter and one American military working dog. Among the Americans killed were 17 Navy SEALs, five Army aircrew members, and three Air Force special tactics personnel. It remains the single deadliest day for U.S. Special Operations forces in history and the largest single loss of American life sustained by the United States during the war in Afghanistan.
Brian was among them. He was just 31 years old.
A day before what would have been his 47th birthday, Brian’s family and community gathered to honor his ultimate sacrifice and dedicate The Brian R. Bill Darien Memorial VFW Post 6933 in his name.
This dedication is more than a memorial. It is a promise that Brian’s name, his service, and his sacrifice will never be forgotten.
The sacrifice our service members and their families, especially Gold Star families make is immeasurable. The liberty and security we enjoy every day as Americans have been secured by those willing to give everything in defense of our nation.
We owe them a debt that can never be repaid, but we can remember. We can honor. And we can serve those who served us.
We will forever honor Brian, and his brothers and sisters in uniform, and we will never forget the families who have borne the greatest sacrifice for our country.
