Mather Homestead

Mather Homestead The Mather Homestead Foundation is dedicated to the preservation of the 1778 Mather home and property

The Mather Homestead was built in 1778 and owned by the Mather family through seven generations, until 2016 when it was donated to The Mather Homestead Foundation thanks to the generosity of the McPherson family. The Mather Homestead is known for its important role during the Revolutionary War and was also the home of Stephen Tyng Mather, the father of our national parks system.

To all who gave their lives in service to our country - and to all who turned out to honor them in yesterday’s Memorial Day Parade- including our friends - thank you! 🇺🇸

The Mather Homestead is proud and grateful to be part of a community with such strong volunteer spirit and to live and work among people who care deeply about giving back. Yesterday was a powerful reminder that the spirit of community is alive and well here in Darien. 🇺🇸

What a memorable day we shared exploring University’s extraordinary collections and exhibitions together. From the fascinating errata collection to the powerful stories behind “Unfurling the Flag” and “Keeping Alive the Remembrance” , the day was filled with history, reflection, and discovery.

We are especially grateful to Joellyn and Kevin Gray for so thoughtfully curating this experience, and for their warm hospitality at Mory’s to end such a special afternoon.

Thank you to everyone who joined us!

“Future Founding Mothers!” ✨

A huge thank you to the Girl Scout Troop for visiting The Mather Homestead, asking such thoughtful questions, and bringing so much curiosity and enthusiasm to the afternoon. And a special thank you to docent Flo Heubeck for leading and inspiring the next generation of history-makers! 💙

Yesterday at The Homestead, history came to life! 🇺🇸

A Patriot victory—and a memorable day for the hundreds of visitors, young and old, who experienced the Revolution firsthand at The Mather Homestead’s May 2 reenactment.

Connecticut’s 5th Regiment drove Britain’s 38th Regiment of Foot back into the woods after their attempted raid on the Mather home.

What better way to honor our nation’s 250 year history than by bringing it to life.

Thank you, George Washington, and Connecticut’s first State Troubadour Tom Callinan, for delighting and inspiring us.
