by providing two scholarships to graduating seniors at McIntosh County Academy. Chester A. was a native of McIntosh County. He was the son of the late William and Amanda DeVillars. He completed his formal education in the elementary schools of McIntosh County. He received his high school diploma from Beach High School in Savannah, Georgia. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Georgia Sta
te College, now known as Savannah State University. DeVillars did further study at Fisk University and Atlanta University. He later attended Columbia University Teachers College, where he received his Master’s Degree in Administration. DeVillars was the first Black to serve on the Board of Registrars in the State of Georgia. He was also the first Black to serve as City Councilman in Darien, Georgia. He also served as Mayor Pro-tem of Darien for eight years. His first administrative position was principal of Valdosta Elementary School, in Valdosta, Georgia. His next position was principal of Carneghan Elementary School. Later, he became principal of Todd-Grant Elementary and High School. He served as an educator in the State of Georgia and the McIntosh County community for a total of 42 years. Professor DeVillars retired in June 1978. He was an active deacon and member of First African Baptist Church, where he served as chairman of the Deacon Board. He was also active in many civic and professional organizations and received numerous awards and certificates of accomplishments. He was married to Selena Champen DeVillars of Savannah, Georgia and was the father of three children: Chester, Jr., Deanna (Pat), and Donald. He was also the proud grandfather of five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
