I wish I had the energy to write a loving and wonderful tribute worthy of my best friend but the truth is, I just don't. I'm sick and tired of writing eulogies, sick and tired of tragedy, and sick and tired of this world to be honest. When I say Bandit was my pride and joy, that is not just an expression. Without him, I have a lot less pride and a lot less joy.

His buoyant and beautiful spirit, soul, face, and being made every day feel special. He was the best part of my days. That is not something that can or will be replaced. The pain is of course unbearable... I still cannot fathom how this vibrant being who did not have one unhealthy day here can suddenly drop dead. But that is exactly what happened.

In some ways, I see myself as a walking curse cast in a shadow of death with all the tragedy that I have overseen. But at the same time, I also know Bandit would have been dead three years ago but for me, as would Tiger, Vanessa, Brady, Alamo, Buster, and the others we have lost.

No one loved life here as much as Bandit. Every meal, every day, every walk, Bandit lived it to the fullest. His spirit was infectious and was powerful enough to infuse my cynical and tired soul with joy every single time I was with him. That's gone and isn't coming back.

Death and time will win... they always will. Evil will win the war, but good will win some battles. Bandit's life, despite being tragically cut short, is validation to me that fighting for these animals and getting them extra time, giving them additional life, fighting to win these battles is worthwhile, regardless of the personal toll it takes.

So the show goes on. I have continued my duties and didn't miss a walk with my others. I always will fight, though will look to step back and do that more from the legal end as opposed to the day to day with the dogs. We have a wonderful team, and I'm happy to let others take over to a point. I haven't had anything resembling a day off for three years and truth is, it'll likely be me falling over in the fields if I kept up at this rate. Tempting as that may be, I will serve out my existence to benefit these souls as best as I can.

Melloncamp said it best... life goes on, even after the thrill of living is gone. Bandit brought me that thrill of living. He is proof there is magic and beauty in the world, and it is always worth fighting for, regardless of personal price.

I appreciate all the very kind words and support offered by everyone. However, this rescue was started by bucking conventional wisdom and seeking and finding real truth. We have done so and will continue to do so. Dogs do not have to be shot by police during search warrants. Testing dogs in labs is not a necessary evil. Specific to Bandit, dogs that bite don't have to be put down, and aren't in a better place when they do get put down. So I take no comfort in the cliches and fairytales we tell ourselves to deal with grief. It wasn't his time, this isn't part of a plan, it didn't happen for a reason besides some sudden and shocking heart failure, and I have no idea if he's in a better place and neither does nobody else. This was his place. And in my broken and beaten heart.

🚨 URGENT FOSTER NEEDED FOR LEO 🚨

We are running out of time and desperately need a foster or foster-to-adopt home for Leo. Without a place for him to go, we need our community’s help to find him a safe landing spot as quickly as possible.

❤️ Meet Leo ❤️

Leo is a 3-year-old Irish Wolfhound mix weighing in at 95 pounds of love, loyalty, and sensitivity. While he may look like a giant, he’s truly a gentle soul who wants nothing more than to be close to his people. He’ll happily follow you from room to room, soak up affection, and settle quietly by your side once the excitement of the day is over.

Leo recently graduated from his board and train program and has worked incredibly hard. He has made amazing progress and will come with training support and lessons to help his foster continue the plan that has set him up for success.

🏡 Leo’s ideal foster home:
• Adult-only or highly controlled environment
• Low-traffic home with minimal visitors
• Experienced dog handler preferred
• Calm, structured household
• No cats or small animals
• Can live with another dog with proper management and separation during meals and high-value situations

🐾 What you should know:
Leo is fully housebroken, crate trained for short periods, walks nicely on leash, and is respectful in the home. He does not destroy household items and settles well once he feels secure.

Like many dogs who have experienced stress and instability, Leo can become overwhelmed during certain situations. He has a history of resource guarding and startle-based reactions, which means he needs a foster willing to follow his training plan and provide the structure that helps him feel safe.

The reality is that dogs like Leo are often overlooked. Not because they’re bad dogs, but because they need someone willing to understand them. What we see in Leo is a dog who has worked hard, who wants to trust, who wants to love, and who deserves the chance to continue thriving.

We know his perfect foster is out there.

Please help us find them.

Share this post. Tag experienced dog owners. Reach out if you can foster. Leo’s future depends on someone stepping forward, and our timeline is incredibly short. ❤️‍🩹

🚨 FOSTER OR FOSTER-TO-ADOPT NEEDED URGENTLY FOR BLAZE & DANGER 🚨

We are begging for someone to step up for Blaze and Danger…..we know it’s hard to find a bonded pair a home but we believe in the power of social media ❤️‍🩹

These sweet, bonded 7-year-old Lab/Pit mix boys have already lost so much in their lives, and now they need a safe place to land. They don’t understand why they’re still waiting. They don’t understand why people keep passing them by. They only know that every day ends without a family of their own.

Blaze and Danger are the kind of dogs who make you smile. They are happy-go-lucky, goofy boys who live for belly rubs, affection, and time spent with their people. Despite everything they’ve been through, they still greet the world with wagging tails and hopeful hearts.

They must stay together. They are bonded and find comfort in one another. They will need time to decompress and adjust, and they should be fed separately. A home without cats or small animals is required, and slow introductions to other dogs are recommended. Older children are preferred.

What breaks our hearts is knowing that because they’re older and because they’re a bonded pair, they keep getting overlooked. But these boys deserve more than being overlooked. They deserve a couch to curl up on, a family to love, and a chance to spend their golden years knowing what it feels like to truly belong.

Please don’t let Blaze and Danger continue waiting.

If you’ve ever thought about fostering, if you’ve ever considered opening your home, please consider these two. A foster home saves lives, and right now, it could save theirs.

Please share far and wide. Their family may be just one share away. ❤️

Last night, we lost our beloved Bandit unexpectedly.

He was having a good day and was his happy-go-lucky self. He saw Matt coming for the evening walk and got the zoomies, as usual. Matt was Bandit’s favorite person in the whole world.

Bandit ate his dinner with enthusiasm, as usual, and then Matt and Bandit walked the fields together into the sunset. Bandit got excited seeing deer grazing in the distance, just like he always did… but then he suddenly stopped and collapsed to the ground.

Our sanctuary manager immediately performed CPR, but Bandit could not be revived. We are absolutely devastated and still in utter shock.

But there is something beautiful in knowing that Bandit left this world doing what he loved most, with the person he loved most.

Matt and Bandit were soul flames. Matt saved Bandit, and Bandit saved Matt. This loss is crippling to our sanctuary and to Matt personally.

Because we have other animals depending on us, the show must go on… but our hearts are broken, and they may never fully heal.

Bandit was larger than life. He was a true testament to the work that we do. He was failed by a system, and we gave him refuge… and in return, he gave us endless love, laughter, and joy.

Matt will write a proper obituary for his beloved boy in a few days. For now, Matt just needs space to grieve and quiet love and support.

Run free, Bandit. You were deeply loved and your legacy will live on forever. We will never stop fighting against the systems that failed you. 🖤

Many times, we post stories of dogs who go from rags to riches... walking miracles of dogs who go from dead to happily ever after. But life isn't always happily ever after. Sometimes, there are setbacks. Disappointments. Dreams that don't work out. When that happens, we don't give up on our dogs. We try to give them every possible and reasonable chance to succeed.

Six months ago or so, Darla was found in a ditch in Chautauqua County. Scared and stressed, she growled at every person she saw... except the Town of Sheridan Dog Control . That Officer, who we like and is one of the good ones, sought help from every rescue. We were the ones that answered the call. Darla was a little bit of a mess... fear reactive, clearly beaten and broken by humans before they left her in a ditch. In other words, just our type.

We sent her to a board and train where she made great progress and then to a wonderful foster home. This is where happily ever after hit a wall. There were no great mistakes made by anyone involved. The foster is great. We provided every resource. Darla was loved, cared for, and worked with. The margins of error are small for our dogs.

But they still deserve every chance we can give them... their lives are precious and worthwhile. We can't always make a miracle happen. We can give each animal the best chance we can give them. So now she is here with us at the sanctuary. So far so good. With a neurotic dog such as Darla, our hope is that the clean fresh air, structure, routine and consistency of the sanctuary will give her the peace that she could never find in the outer world.

The reality is though, we don't know how it will work out. But we know she deserves that chance. For her, for any of them...we will take that chance.

🚨 DESPERATE HELP NEEDED 🚨

When it rains, it truly pours.
While we're desperately trying to catch up financially from mounting veterinary bills and rescue expenses, the needs of the dogs in our care don't stop. No matter how overwhelmed we are, turning our backs on them has never been an option.

Right now, we are in urgent need of THREE separate fosters for Leo, Dumpling, and Blaze & Danger.

We provide everything for you; training, supplies, crates, collar, leash..everything you could ask for. We just need you to open up your home

📍Dumpling 🥟

Are you looking for the perfect “starter hippo” with extra wiggles and a built-in love of cheese? Well congratulations, your search is over.

Dumpling is a 40-pound, low-riding chunk of love wrapped up in one hilariously adorable package. At around 1.5 years old, this American Bully mix somehow ended up with the legs of a potato and the personality of your funniest best friend.

✨ Dumpling features include:
• Pocket-sized land seal body
• Professional car ride passenger
• Olympic-level cheese detector
• Housebroken AND crate trained
• Dog, cat, and even reptile friendly
• Expert snuggler with tiny-leg zoomie capabilities

Dumpling would prefer a calmer home where she can keep being the best version of herself. She’d thrive with older kiddos and would be happiest as either the only dog or with just one calm dog sibling. Too much chaos makes her little brain short circuit a bit — honestly relatable.

Like many dogs, Dumpling has a past. She previously had an overstimulated moment in a very chaotic environment with barking dogs and screaming children that resulted in a nip. No blood was drawn, and since being in a structured environment, she has absolutely blossomed.

What Dumpling really needs is someone willing to look past one moment and see the incredible dog standing in front of them: goofy, loving, loyal, resilient, and full of personality.

She’s not asking for perfection — just a family willing to give her stability, understanding, snacks, and preferably an unreasonable amount of cheese. 🧀

📍Leo:
Leo is 3 years old and 95lbs
He is an Irish Wolfhound mix
Leo is an energetic but calm and attentive boy in the home. He’s incredibly sensitive, affectionate, and loves being close to his people—he’ll happily follow you from room to room. He enjoys playtime but also settles nicely once things are calm.

🎓 Training Plan:
Leo will be going to a professional board and train program. We are seeking a foster placement AFTER he completes board and train to work on his manners and for him to thrive. An ideal foster would be one to continue his training plan from the board and train facility

⚠️ Important Needs:
• Adult-only or very controlled environment (no young children)
• Low-traffic home with minimal visitors
• Experienced handler preferred
• Can live with other dogs, but must be separated during feeding and high-value situations
*He does chase kitty friends and thinks its a game

Leo can become highly excited during transitions (going outside, mealtime, toys, people coming home), and he has a history of reacting when startled, overwhelmed, or when resources (like food or space) are involved.

🐾 Behavior Background:
Leo has had several near bite and bite incidents involving both dogs and people, typically tied to startle responses or resource guarding. He would do best in a calm, low-stimulation environment where he can feel safe and settled.

🐾 Other Notes:
• Fully housebroken
• Crate trained (used during transitions)
• Walks on leash with collar/harness
• Does not destroy household items
• Has shown curiosity toward small animals but requires supervision

Crate trained for short periods of time

📍Meet Blaze & Danger

These handsome bonded Lab/Pit mix boys are 7 years old and searching for a family willing to give them the chance they deserve.

Blaze and Danger are happy-go-lucky, people-loving dogs who believe belly rubs are one of life’s greatest treasures. They adore human attention and are always ready to make new friends with people.

As a bonded pair, they must stay together. They will need time to decompress and settle into their new home, and they should be fed separately. Because of their prey drive, they are looking for a home without cats or small animals. Slow, proper introductions are recommended with other dogs, and older children are preferred.

These boys may not be puppies anymore, but they still have so much love, loyalty, and joy to give. All they’re asking for is someone willing to look past their age and give them the fresh start they’ve been waiting for.

Tank 💪🏻
6 years old
Lab/Rottweiler mix
No little kiddos or kitties

Don’t let Tank’s age fool you—he’s still playful, active, and in excellent health! He loves his squeaky toys, chew bones, car rides, getting splashed with the garden hose, and long walks, but at the end of the day, his favorite thing is to snuggle up close with his people.

Tank is also a staff favorite at our sanctuary. Everyone who meets him falls in love with his big heart and goofy, lovable personality. At home, he’s the perfect gentleman house trained, respectful of furniture and blankets, and never one to get into the garbage.

If you’re looking for a loyal companion to join you on road trips, hikes, or lazy afternoons on the couch, Tank is your guy. He’s ready to be your co-pilot, adventure buddy, and cuddly best friend all in one.

We need help, we are drowning in vet bills right now ❤️‍🩹

In just the last few weeks alone, we have accumulated nearly $6,000 in medical veterinary expenses for the Ridglan beagles, Ethel, Rocco, Paige and several other of our rescue dogs for spay/neuter. These aren’t optional costs. These are surgeries, exams, diagnostics, medications, vet visits, and lifesaving care for dogs who had nobody else.

Ethel is dealing with painful dental issues and needs a tooth extracted. Rocco became so stressed and overwhelmed that it physically made him sick and required medical care. The ridglan ladies are finally receiving treatment for the aftermath of what years of testing did to their bodies likely the first truly compassionate medical care many of them have ever experienced in their lives.
These dogs came from suffering, fear, neglect, laboratories, abandonment, and heartbreak. They are finally safe… but safety comes with medical bills we are struggling to carry.

Here are our recent vet charges:

$789.60 - Cornell vet for beagle spays (6/1)
$170.07 - Geneva vet for Ethel (6/1)
$471.01 - Alden vet
$236.03 - Alden vet
$50 - Norma Jean telehealth (5/29)
$402 - Encompass (5/29)
$372.46 - Alden vet (5/29)
$140.06 - Alden vet (5/28)
$356.36 - Alden vet (5/27)
$618.58 - Alden vet (5/27)
$468.95 - Alden vet (5/21)
$434.19 - Alden vet (5/19)
$457.86 - Orchard Park vet for Rocco (5/19)
$320.38 - Emma vet (5/14)
$435.51 - Orchard Park vet (5/11)
$195.57 - Alden vet (5/6)

TOTAL: $5,918.63

We are begging for help at this point. Even $5 makes a difference when hundreds of people come together. If you cannot donate, PLEASE share this post.
We are so incredibly thankful to everyone who has already donated supplies, money, love, shares, encouragement, and support. We truly would not still be standing without you. You are the reason these dogs are alive, safe, and cared for today.

Please help us keep going. 💔
