The History of Home Economics at Purdue: How It Shaped Our Campus and Our Lives

Purdue University Archives and Special Collections invites you to view a new exhibition, “The History of Home Economics at Purdue: How It Shaped Our Campus and Our Lives,” which will explore the origins, growth, and lasting impact of home economics at Purdue University.

Exhibition is on view, August 24–December 11, 2026, Monday–Friday | 10:00 AM–4:30 PM at the Virginia Kelly Karnes Archives and Special Collections Research Center, 4th Floor HSSE Library in Stewart Center.

The exhibition will be marked by a reception on Thursday, September 24, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on the fourth floor of the HSSE Library in Stewart Center. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore the exhibition and hear from home economics educators, administrators, and career professionals in a panel discussion. Local author Angie Klink will be interviewing home economics professionals Joyce Miles, Olivia Bennett Wood, and Mary Alice Nebold about the field, their careers, and the impact of the profession. The campus community and public are invited to attend.

Are you a planner? Do you need a reason to eat out next week? Well! Save Tuesday, September 1st between 3-10pm for our "Dine to Donate" night at Texas Roadhouse. You get a scrumptious meal and 10% of your meal is donated to us, the Hendricks County Extension Homemakers. We will put that money aside for Education Scholarships. Each year we have been able to award three $1,000 scholarships. This year, we'd like to give out four if possible. Help us meet our goal!!!! Don't forget when you go to show them this picture, so your server can scan the barcode. So, print it off or save it to your phone.

There are a lot of activities starting up next month. Helping Hands Day will begin on Thursday, September 10, at 10 am at Bartlett Chapel in Avon. It is time to make more blankets for Riley Children’s Hospital. I’m sure your fingers are already twitching with excitement!!! We will be turning fringe but we also will be sewing some around the edge. We also may be cutting out bags for Cypress Manor. So, come and join the fun on Thursday, September 10th at 10 am.

Do you like to sing? Would you like the opportunity to sing in a group? A group that has concerts and encourages others? Well, we have just the opportunity for you! Our "Treblemakers" (Hendricks County Choral Club aka The Treblemakers) are having an open house on Monday, August 24, beginning at 6:30 pm. It will be at the Hendricks County Senior Center (1201 Sycamore Lane, Danville).

You'll have the opportunity to learn more about the Treblemakers, meet a number of the current members, and enjoy some refreshments. This is an EXCELLENT opportunity to see if the Treblemakers would be a good fit for you. Invite other friends that enjoy singing and encouraging others. IT's open to all ages!

Extension Homemakers! Your Council Members and Club Presidents are hard at work this year. It is going to be a GREAT year for the homemakers and we have a lot we want to accomplish!!!! However, we are always open to new ideas and thoughts. So, don't be afraid to mention your idea to your Club President or Council Member. OR! IF you are a night owl like myself, feel email us at 1:30 am at [email protected]. We may not answer at that time, but then again, we may. :)

We had a lot of fun at our August Craft Day! We had about 15 ladies in attendance and we made pumpkins out of canning rings. We were also to make a few extras for Homemakers that need a little extra encouragement. Here are some of the pumpkins!!! They are quite creative!!! Unfortunately, some of the pumpkins were camera shy. :)

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, September 1 (3-10pm), and plan on eating out for dinner that night for our "Dine to Donate" Fundraiser at Texas Roadhouse in Avon (10340 US 36 East). Both Dine In and To-Go orders are accepted for the fundraiser. Just make sure you show your serve (or To-go Staff) the picture below, so they can scan the barcode. So, download this picture onto your phone or download the flyer from https://drive.google.com/file/d/1odufioqcFB9IJlf-HKFEuAQddx9qZZSO/view?usp=sharing . Then you can print it out and give a flyer to three of your closest friends. Then plan on meeting there and having a party!!!!
