Beyond the heated competition, we are having FUN as the 2026 Stratford Members Tournaments rolls along to its completion/party on Saturday, October 24th. Once the tallest man in the club, Joe has been doing really great since his leg shortening surgery in order to make the playing field more even.

Tennis is one of the hardest sports in the world.

From a technical point of view, it asks for a lot. Unlike padel, where you can pick up a racket and have fun right away, tennis takes real work. For many beginners, it can take months, sometimes even a full year, before they start hitting the ball consistently well. It is a sport that demands patience, feel, and precision.

Mentally, it may be even more difficult. You are completely alone on court, dealing with pressure, mistakes, momentum changes, and emotions all by yourself. There is no one to lean on and nowhere to hide.

Physically, it asks for everything: first-step explosiveness, speed, endurance, power, strength in both the upper and lower body, and top-level cardio. Tactically, it never stops evolving. Every point is a new problem to solve.

That is exactly what makes tennis so unique.

Do you think any sport is more complete than tennis, or does tennis demand the most?

We were happy to contribute dozens of tennis balls donated from Stratford Tennis Club members at the the 5th Annual Pup-A-Palooza, hosted by the SPCA of Pittsylvania County at Rocky Branch Farm. The SPCA of Pittsylvania County is a volunteer foster-based animal rescue based in Chatham, VA. As seen in the photos, dogs love playing or chewing on the tennis balls. Thanks to all who donated.

A graveside service for Bob Cleary will be held at Danville Memorial Gardens on HWY 58 at Church Ave on Friday at 11:00. Several of us are planning on attending. All his friends and fellow tennis players are welcome.
Bob was a long time member of our tennis club and had played with our morning men’s group as recently as a few weeks ago. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and fellow tennis players.

This year, we've continued to see a resurgence of younger players on the Stratford Tennis Courts. From left to right: Scarlett, Bernette, Emanuel S, Lydia, Alana, and Emanuel M.
Several of these players are also employees of Kegerreis digital marketing, the company who created our website back in the day. If you are a young person thinking of picking up the sport of gaining more consistent competition, message us today to join the Stratford family!
