115 years ago today, our department lost our first officer to a line of duty death. Patrolman August Lind was 50 years old and in his 20th year with our department. Patrolman Lind left behind his wife and three children. His murder remains unsolved.
The following words were spoken a few years ago by Mayor Eisenhauer at the annual police memorial held during police week each May:
"Danville Police Department Patrolman August Lind was a turn-of-the-century police officer. The city had been through one of the most difficult periods of its history and was just beginning to rebuild following the riots of 1903. Patrolman Lind was sent to a building on South Vermilion Street to investigate a report that burglars were trying to force entry. Two men were found at the back of the saloon, and before he could draw his revolver, one of the men fired upon Patrolman Lind. The injuries he suffered were too much to overcome in the days following the incident. Patrolman Lind died April 10, 1908.”
Rest easy brother. We have the watch....
