Our third Survivor Spotlight goes to Scotty Owen, a survivor of testicular and lung cancer!

Hello, my name is Scotty Owen and I will be sharing a little about my cancer journey and how I am now very blessed to be a cancer survivor.

July 27, 2024, my 42nd birthday, I began to experience a lot of pain that led me to the hospital, a lot of pain, a lot of tests, and one surgery later I was told I had testicular cancer.

It changed my life in so many ways but since the doctors were able to catch it in time and perform surgery I was told I did not have to do Chemo, just monthly scans to make sure the cancer did not spread anywhere else. All was fine, until late December after a scan I was told the cancer had spread to my lungs.

It was a really hard thing to hear and to have to figure out what the next steps were. I decided to do chemotherapy, I started treatment and quickly became very sick. With the treatments came a lot of side effects and a lot of hospitalizations, that were near death experiences. From my body disagreeing with the treatments, to a bug bite that led to low platelets counts that could have killed me from having a very weak immune system, to not being able to eat and having no energy and many other issues that arose during my time with cancer.

I was never able to finish a full round of chemotherapy due to all of the side effects, so my doctor recommended a in-treatment week since I had previously done out treatment (where I came home after treatments.) I did an inpatient treatment week at UVA and still was very sick from the side effects, after that week and my many near death experiences I decided to see how the chemotherapy, worked and prayed the rounds of chemo I had done got rid of the cancer.

I was extremely blessed to find out that I was cancer free in July 2025. Overall cancer changed my life in so many ways and was a very scary experience. I now am very thankful for everyday things and do not take a moment for granted because I am very blessed to still be here today.

đźš—Mileage Reimbursementđźš—

Treatment isn’t always close to home. While we don’t supply free transportation services for cancer patients, we can help offset the cost of travel by:

Reimbursing $0.35 per mile for cancer-related medical appointments.

No mileage log needed—we calculate distance using MapQuest.

Just provide an After Visit Summary for each appointment.

Checks are processed weekly—no long waits.

We had so much fun last night at our annual Celebration of Life event honoring cancer survivors in our community! As we wait for the official photos from our photographer to share, Karen Johnston was kind enough to snap a few candid photos during the night. Be on the lookout next week for all of the shots from S.Jones Photography.

Special thanks to River Oak Church for allowing us to use their facilities, Betty Lester and her team for catering, Katrina Forest and John Jones for the live music, and GEM Ministries for teaching us all how to line dance!

Our second Survivor Spotlight goes to Vickie Hughes, a 3 time cancer survivor!

My name is Vickie Hughes and I'm a 3 time cancer survivor. I have had 3 different types of cancer none of which is related to the other. I was first diagnosed with malignant melanoma in 1998. Fortunately it was stage one. I had it removed and no further treatment was needed.

Then in 2019 I was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. I had a lumpectomy along with chemo and radiation. I have been breast cancer free since 2020.

I was diagnosed with stage 2 pancreatic cancer in October of 2023. It has spread which makes it a stage 4. I have undergone the whipple surgery and I'm still taking chemo. I feel decent most days but some days are tough.

I have signed up for numerous trial studies in hopes that maybe I can make a difference for someone else. I have a great support system with my husband, my children, family and friends. My church has played a big role in that. I put my trust in God as I know He knows what's best for me. I have no worries! Praise be to God!

The Danville Pittsylvania Cancer Association has helped me out a great deal. They have paid for numerous prescriptions that at the time I couldn't afford. They have paid for mileage to and from treatment, and they also help with overnight stays if needed. They offer assistance in a lot of ways. They are such an asset to our community.

Our first Survivor Sunday is to highlight Vicki Hernandez and her battle against Hodgkin's lymphoma!

My name is Vicki Hernandez, and I am a Hodgkin’s lymphoma survivor. I was diagnosed in November 2025 and completed my treatments in May 2026.
During one of the most difficult times in my life, the Danville Pittsylvania Cancer Association stood beside me and my family with unwavering support.

As I traveled to Duke University for treatments, they helped with medication costs, travel expenses, the purchase of a wig, nutritional supplements, and even provided a walker when I was at my weakest.

Their kindness and generosity lifted burdens off my family so we could focus on what mattered most — my healing and recovery. We will forever be grateful for the compassion and care they showed us throughout this journey.

If you are wondering where your donations can make a real difference locally, please consider supporting the Danville Pittsylvania Cancer Association. Their support changes lives, and I am living proof of that.
