Make and Take Spring Basket
Educational Event

The Yell County Extension Homemakers (EH) hosted an educational Make and Take event on Saturday, April 11 at the Leon Milsap Senior Activity Center in Danville. This special Make and Take Spring Basket gathering provided a wonderful opportunity for participants to engage in learning, express creativity, enjoy fellowship, and celebrate the spirit of spring.

Opening Activity
The event began with Wendy Wells reading Kevin Henkes’ My Garden. The story follows a girl who helps her mother in the garden but imagines a garden of her own full of chocolate rabbits, tomatoes as big as beach balls, flowers that change color, and seashells. This imaginative reading set a creative tone for the event.

Gardening Tips and Techniques
Peggy Burns, a former Dardanelle Garden Club member and Master Gardener, shared valuable advice on planting potted plants. She emphasized the importance of considering each plant’s sun exposure and watering needs. Peggy warned that overwatering is a frequent mistake, reminding attendees to be mindful of their watering habits.
She also introduced the Thriller, Spiller, and Filler method for creating balanced flower arrangements in containers. This classic technique involves combining tall, dramatic plants (Thrillers), trailing and cascading plants (Spillers) that soften the edges, and plants that add volume, texture, and color (Fillers) for a lush, visually appealing planter.

Make and Take Spring Basket Activity
Participants enjoyed designing their own Spring baskets by filling pots with soil and selecting plants in an assembly line. Afterward, everyone returned to their tables to creatively arrange their plants, fostering a lively atmosphere of camaraderie and conversation. Special thanks to Evergreen Nursery in Centerville for supporting EH with supplies and beautiful healthy plants.

Though many Arkansans have already emptied their grocery stores of milk, bread and eggs in preparation for this weekend’s expected winter storm, extension experts say it’s wise to stock up on nutrient-dense, non-perishable foods instead and to practice food safety guidelines if power is lost.
