UPDATE: It's nothing but a memory now! See the last photo below. My friend Brannon Blount just did a ride by and sent the last pic. 😪

More changes in Schoolfield today! Demolition began on The Thompson House (800 West Main Street) on the corner of West Main Street and Park Avenue ...after over 2 decades of sitting empty ...and continuing to decay.

Sad to see another old home, that had once been filled with love and laughter, coming down ...but it was time!

In the time we stepped into CVS to purchase one item, the entire center section was torn off. It should be nothing but wood rubble at this time tomorrow.

What will the reinvention of this corner look like next?

It's getting real! Even though it's a COLD, damp Saturday morning in Schoolfield, the work continues at what will soon be Danville's newest 'Boutique Hotel'....The Laurel. The sign is going up today....so it won't be long now! Opening in early 2026. Life and light coming back to this historic building. Rebuilding Schoolfield one building at a time. ❤️

If you ride down West Main Street, through 'Downtown Schoolfield Village,' there is some activity that is quite obvious and some not at all obvious!

What you CAN see is the roof on the future 'Laurel' nearing completion, with scaffolding removed from 3 sides of the building. As with 917, those terra cotta tiles were painstaking placed like puzzle pieces to achieve these beautiful results. The copper trim only adds to the beauty! Now that the roof replacement is complete, the transformation of the inside of this beautiful space will start to unfold.

What you can't see is the activity happening inside the Bluebird Nestboxes, on the 'Schoolfield Village Trail,' scattered around the two properties. This 10 box trail was set up last year with excellent 1st year nesting results! We are rolling into year two of nesting season with nest building in progress, eggs laid, eggs hatched, and two clutches of babies getting ready to fledge.

So that's what's happening in Schoolfield today..... oh.....and then there's that little place down the road.....full of fun things to do, and great local musicians performing there every weekend!

FINALLY! For several months, both the old Dan River Mills Welfare Building (a.k.a. the 'Personnel Bulding in later years) at 917 West Main and the original Executive Building across the street have been surrounded by scaffolding. The old damaged terra cotta tiles have been removed from both buildings, roof repairs made, and insulation added. We have watched, with eager anticipation, as the new tiles were meticulously stacked, like a beautiful puzzle, on the roof at 917.

Yesterday, the scaffolding came down, to allow us to fully see the details of this gorgeous new roof! The first terra cotta roof lasted over 100 years and this new roof will surely take this historical building into the next 100 years. Notice the details along the top of the roof line and the copper trim on the vents.

Follow the progress across the street as the new roof on the old Executive Building starts coming to life in the weeks ahead.
