“I’m glad I didn’t stop at no. I’m glad someone finally listened to me.”

In this Hear Her® story from CDC, Sanari shares how she experienced severe pain just days after delivery and was initially told it was caused by gas. But when her symptoms continued to worsen, she trusted herself and kept seeking help. An abscess was eventually found on her uterus—something that could have become life-threatening if left untreated.

At Healthy Families, we believe parents deserve support, education, and the confidence to speak up when something doesn’t feel right. Postpartum recovery looks different for everyone, and no concern should be ignored or dismissed.

💛 Keep asking questions. Keep advocating for your health. Your voice matters.

When your little one feels warm, uncomfortable, or under the weather, knowing how to properly check their temperature can help you respond with confidence.

Different thermometers and methods work better at different ages, and understanding those differences can make it easier to know when to monitor symptoms at home and when to contact your child’s healthcare provider.

Healthy Families works alongside parents during all the little moments of early childhood—from questions about feeding and sleep to fevers, milestones, routines, and everyday parenting concerns. Sometimes reassurance and good information can go a long way.

Parents are constantly told they need more toys, more technology, and more “educational” products for their children to succeed—but healthy development is often much simpler than that.

Babies and toddlers learn best through connection, conversation, movement, play, and everyday interaction with the people around them. A cardboard box, kitchen spoon, song, story, or cuddle can be just as meaningful as the latest toy on the shelf.

Healthy Families helps parents explore simple, realistic ways to support child development through play, routines, communication, and positive interaction—without the pressure to be perfect or buy more.

Sometimes the most important part of play isn’t the toy. It’s the relationship. 💛

💛 Partner Spotlight: Virginia Department of Health & MIECHV 💛

Healthy Families is proud to receive support connected to the Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting (MIECHV) program through the Virginia Department of Health.

This support helps us provide personalized education, encouragement, and resources to parents during pregnancy and throughout early childhood—helping families build strong foundations for lifelong health and well-being.

By investing in evidence-based home visiting programs, VDH and MIECHV continue helping communities create healthier futures for children and families across Virginia.

Thank you for supporting families in Danville and Pittsylvania County. 💛

Every child grows and develops at their own pace, but understanding developmental milestones can help parents recognize what’s typical—and when it may be time to ask questions or seek additional support. 💛

This helpful chart highlights common physical development milestones from 3 to 15 months, along with signs to watch for that may indicate a child could benefit from further evaluation or support.

At Healthy Families, we encourage parents to trust their instincts, celebrate progress, and reach out with concerns early. Early support and intervention can make a meaningful difference in a child’s growth and development.

Did you know? Fathers can build strong, secure bonds with their babies from the very beginning.

When fathers are present, responsive and involved, infants can form deep attachments with both parents. Simple moments like holding, feeding, talking, soothing and playing all help babies feel safe, loved and connected.

This Fatherhood Engagement Month, VDSS celebrates the important role fathers and father figures play in a child’s healthy development. Learn more at dss.virginia.gov/fathers.

Parenting doesn’t come with a perfect script—and discipline is often one of the hardest parts to navigate.

Children learn best through consistency, calm boundaries, positive modeling, and feeling safe and connected with the adults around them. While every child is different, small changes in how we respond can have a big impact over time.

Through home visiting, parenting support, and family-centered education, Healthy Families helps parents build confidence, strengthen communication, and develop strategies that support healthy emotional growth for both children and caregivers.

Progress doesn’t happen overnight—but support makes the journey easier. 💛
