GCV Board Of Governors 2026 hosted by The Franklin Garden Club was like visiting your best friends! First we attended the Blackwater Park Dedication Ceremony where we were welcomed by Mayor Paul Kaplan! Blackwater Park is named after Blackwater River. The 203 acre park will soon include a 96 acre annex. In 2023, the park was awarded the Governor’s Gold Award for Excellence. The Franklin Garden Club has been a major partner in this project. We were honored by the six white oak trees planted along the driveway in honor of the GCV’s six districts! Next we traveled to The Hubs Vine for the BOG Harvest Banquet where we met Westley Drake a proud 14th generation farmer and the 2026 Sectary of the National Peanut Board. We could write an entire post just on Westley, but do yourself a favor and look him up! We must mention the delicious meal at the Vine! The pork tenderloin with the special apple topping was divine. Wednesday we had a full day of meetings and presentations led by GCV President Jennifer Kelley! We were proud of our Gabriella friends as Katy Jones shared the details of completing the “Home Park,” winner of the 2024 Bessie Bocock Carter Award. Following Katy was our Martinsville friends from The Garden Study Club and The Martinsville Garden Club reporting on the 2024 Common Wealth Award winner “The Nature Garden at Smith River.” Pat Russell and Sarah Wyatt made us proud to be in their District! Next year the BOG meeting will be hosted by our close neighbors the Chatham Garden Club! Amy Walker did a hilarious skit inviting everyone to Southside next year!!!
The Franklin Garden Club President John Drewry, Co-Chairs Becky Scarboro and Patti Rabil created a wonderful BOG! We loved getting to know them and all the FGC members. As we said when we left Fred’s, “We’re family now!” Many thanks to the FGC and the city of Franklin! 🍁🥜🌾🌳

GCV BOG 2026! “Harvest Between the Rivers!”

This was the final stop before leaving Franklin after a fantastic Board of Governor’s meeting. A big thanks to John Drewry and his members for the incredible hospitality!🌳

Today we planted three trees in the Grove Street Cemetery! The Garden Club of Virginia celebrated America’s 250th anniversary by donating trees. With 48 participating clubs 117 native trees will be planted across the state of Virginia! In 1937 an article by Mary Mackenzie Mack was published in The Bee describing the state of ruin of the Grove Street Cemetery. After reading the article the Conservation Committee of the GCD decided to choose the restoration of the Grove Street Cemetery as its annual project. With the help of the City of Danville and a grant from the Work’s Progress Administration (WAP) debris was cleared out, new shrubbery and flowers were planted and the granite wall was extended to enclose the 2 acre cemetery. The Garden Club of Danville adopted the task of preservation and beautification of the Grove Street Cemetery in 1937, so the Cemetery was the perfect place for our trees! Many workdays are spent weeding, planting, painting and cleaning. GCD Grove Street Cemetery Committee Chair Brenda Rowland and Co-Chair Lisa Wintrode have worked with Danville Public Works and City Horticulturist/Arborist Jessica Smith for the past three years to make major improvements to the cemetery. These improvements would not be possible without the support of Danville Public Works, the Garden Club of Virginia Common Wealth Award, the Community Foundation, J.T. Minnie Maude Charitable Trust and the Carrington Charitable Trust. We hope visitors will find the Old Grove Street Cemetery to be a pleasant peaceful destination to enjoy nature and remember those who came before us. 🌳🐝🌸🌼
