Introducing our next speaker, Theresa Stevens!

Theresa Stevens is the Director of Clinical Services at the Survivor Resource Center in Illinois, where she oversees trauma-informed counseling services for children, adolescents, and adults impacted by sexual violence and human trafficking. With over a decade of leadership experience in human services, she works collaboratively with schools, courts, medical providers, correctional facilities, and community partners to expand access to survivor-centered care and strengthen multidisciplinary responses.

Theresa is especially passionate about addressing the unique and often overlooked needs of male survivors of sexual assault and trafficking. Her work focuses on reducing stigma, increasing safe disclosure, and developing engagement strategies that honor masculinity, trauma responses, and complex identity factors. She brings a practical, field-informed perspective grounded in clinical practice, program leadership, and real-world case application.

Theresa Stevens brings a powerful and urgent perspective to the growing issue of sextortion. Through her work with survivors of sexual violence, she has seen firsthand how manipulation, shame, and fear are used to silence victims, especially male survivors. Theresa breaks down the realities of sextortion, from grooming tactics to escalation patterns, while offering practical, trauma informed strategies to support safe disclosure and effective response. Her approach equips professionals with the knowledge and confidence to recognize, respond to, and prevent this increasingly prevalent form of exploitation.

April is Child Abuse Awareness Month ๐Ÿ’™, with it being right around the corner, we want to take a moment to answer an important question:

๐Ÿ‘‰ What is a Child Advocacy Center (CAC)?

A CAC is a safe, child-friendly place where children who may have experienced abuse can come to be heard, supported, and protected. Instead of children having to tell their story over and over, our team works togetherโ€”law enforcement, child protection, medical professionals, and advocatesโ€”to ensure a coordinated, compassionate response.

๐Ÿ’™ Why do we exist?

We exist to reduce trauma, promote healing, and support children and families through some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Every child deserves to feel safe, believed, and supported.

At the Vermilion County Child Advocacy Center, we are here to walk alongside families, provide resources, and help children begin their journey toward healing.

โœจ Together, we can raise awareness, support survivors, and create a safer community for our children.
